Man, is there anything more American than a Big Block Chevelle SS
with a bright paint job and a cackling dual exhaust? This stealthy
Daytona Yellow 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle is a real code 138 SS
4-speed sport coupe, and packs a burly 496 V8 stroker V8,
high-visibility paint, and a gorgeous restored interior. Fully
restored with the pictures and an issue of Muscle Car Review
magazine to prove it, this is a potent A-body with a ton of style
that's available for a lot less than what it would cost to
duplicate the restoration.
Daytona Yellow is an upgrade from this car's original color, and
combined with the big block under the hood, it's pretty evident the
builders of this monster really know how to make an entrance.
Restored to a high driver-quality standard, this real-deal SS
hardtop is simply dazzling in person, with super-straight bodywork
that emphasizes the Chevelle's long rear quarters and unique
C-pillar treatment. Gaps are good all around, and the paint is much
better than even the best finish available in 1967. Sure, it's been
driven a little bit so there are a couple minor signs of use here
and there, but could you actually resist the call of that motor is
this beauty was in you garage? I think I'd probably pull it down my
driveway to check the mail, just to have an excuse to fire this
sucker up each day. All the correct SS details are there, too,
including the blacked-out tail panel, fluted taillights, and the
trick hood with simulated vents that were a Chevy trademark for
years. Bright chrome bumpers were installed, all the remaining
stainless and brightwork is polished to match, and badges and
emblems were installed in the original locations. There's also
finned rocker panel trim running from tire-to-tire at each profile,
offering just enough contrast to really make the vivid yellow paint
finish really pop.
The slick black bucket interior was all restored to original
condition as well, with fresh and supportive seat covers that match
the original patterns exactly. The slick center console houses a
chrome shifter topped with an 8-ball for the 4-speed manual gearbox
underneath, as well as the optional clock, which is a cool little
detail. All the original gauges are intact with super crisp, bright
restored faces and are augmented by a couple auxiliary gauges under
the dash and a cleverly-mounted AutoMeter tachometer off to the
right side of the steering column where it's useful for the
driver's sight line, but not a dominant part of the decor. Newer
black carpets, reproduction door panels, a black dash pad, and a
taut headliner give it a showroom fresh look inside that plays off
the yellow-painted metal parts inside the cabin. The only notable
deviations from stock are a retro-style AM/FM stereo and upgraded
speakers, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and seatbelts front and
rear, but these are subtle changes that flow perfectly with the
theme inside. Inside the neatly painted trunk, you'll find a
reproduction mat and a full-sized spare tire wrapped around a
matching American Racing Torque Thrust wheel.
Under the hood is a symphony of violence: a thumping 496 stroker
big block that's been fully rebuilt with a forged steel crank,
healthy cam that provides a noticeable lope, and a set of Edelbrock
aluminum heads. Using a Holley 4-barrel carburetor atop an
Edelbrock intake manifold and an MSD ignition, it fires up with a
snarl, and idles in a way that lets you know there's big horsepower
on tap, with an aluminum radiator keeping the whole show nice and
cool. Externally, however, it looks ready for show, with lots of
dress-up on the block, including chrome Chevrolet valve covers, a
chrome open-element air cleaner, along with a chrome alternator
that all pop out from the black inner fenders and yellow firewall.
The 4-speed manual transmission shifts great and spins a 10-bolt
rear end that is up to the task of handling all that horsepower.
The chassis is super solid and nicely detailed and features
long-tube headers that feed an H-pipe dual exhaust system with
Flowmaster mufflers that sounds awesome. Classic American Racing
Torque Thrust wheels are period-perfect and wear fat 245/45/17
front and 275/40/17 rear Goodyear Eagle radials.
You couldn't duplicate this car for the asking price, and it's a
fast, reliable, highly detailed SS that will win fans wherever it
