In 1968, the "New Generation" of upscale Mercedes-Benz models,
alternatively known as the S-Class, was introduced. These carefully
refined five-passenger automobiles continued a tradition of
hand-crafted quality and superior engineering, while their formal,
classically-inspired styling featured the discreet use of chrome to
produce what many consider to be a timeless design. In particular,
the Cabriolet variant featured a padded folding top, while its
unitized chassis featured an advanced design with structural
reinforcements that provided great rigidity and safety. As
expected, interior appointments were a magnificent combination of
leather, wood and chrome. In SE trim, the "E" stood for
"Einspritzung" or fuel injection, and horsepower rose to 180.
Capable of top speeds of 120 miles per hour, the 280SE utilized a
sophisticated, fully independent suspension, resulting in taut,
responsive handling that made the 280SE one of the most satisfying
Mercedes-Benz models to drive.
11102512002159, this 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet, was
completed in February of 1969 for home-market delivery in Silver
Grey Metallic paint over Black leather upholstery - additionally
optioned with:
236 - ELECTRIC WINDOW LIFTERS (FRONT AND REAR DOORS)
401 - SINGLE SEATS
426 - MERCEDES-BENZ POWER STEERING AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITH
FLOOR SHIFT
431 - SAFETY BELTS, FRONT
463 - HAZARD WARNING LIGHT WITH HEADLAMP SYSTEM
While the Cabriolet's early history is unknown, the 280 eventually
made its way to the States, where its has remained in thoughtfully
preserved condition with recent notable services. The exterior
received a repaint in correct 2-stage Glasurit early this decade,
while the top is an older replacement. A boot cover conceals the
top during open motoring. The cabin displays what appears to be its
original leather upholstery throughout (with an older re-dye), as
well as the original Dark Grey carpeting - protected by custom
black and grey Coco mats. A period Becker Europa complements the
glossy Zebrano wood across the dash and matching floor shifter
knob. All electronics, lights and safety equipment are in proper
working order, including the clock and cold air conditioning.
Both engine and luggage compartments appear orderly and correct,
with original paint visible in both. This includes the original
chassis stamping along the passenger front fender, stamped and
tagged original number's-matching engine. Original grey vinyl mat
(with protective matching Coco mat on top), spare wheel, jack and
WeatherTech car cover reside in the trunk. Original fender bolts
and spot welds are visible throughout the vehicle - down the sills,
up the rear and into the boot. The car's undercarriage has been
recently detailed and reflects equally as tidy and honest with
factory sealant, coatings and appears very solid and free of
corrosion concerns. A five 14" wheels are date stamped 3/68, 5/68,
7/68, 7/69, 11/69.
The Cabriolet performs very well in all traffic and weather
conditions, thanks to regular upkeep and a 2019 major service.
Notable recent work includes a 2017 fuel pump rebuild and February
2019 oil change and valve adjustment. As well as an April 2019
service addressing new 195/75R14 whiteline tires on cleaned and
resealed rims, 4-wheel alignment, king pins and wheel bearings,
front shocks, exhaust hangers, R134a A/C conversion and HVAC
control knobs, fluid flush, differential pinion seal, soft top
seals, wipers and miscellaneous adjustments. Over $11,000 invested.
An additional inspection and follow up adjustments were performed
in Fall 2019.
We offer this honestly presented and complete numbers-matching
280SE Cabriolet for immediate worldwide purchase and delivery from
