Vehicle Description
Interesting, rare, and absolutely cool, this 1965 Volkswagen Type 2
Single Cab is the kind of machine that will generate a ton of
interest wherever it goes. Featuring a surprisingly powerful motor,
an awesome two-tone paint job, killer custom interior, and a wicked
stance that even impresses the keen experts over at "The Samba"
forum, this fully restored VW took 3 years to complete and is one
of the coolest imports we've ever featured here at Streetside, and
we're proud to have it. Take a closer look, before we change our
minds and decide to keep it for ourselves.
These VW Type 2 trucks have the same cool appeal as the vans, but
are a far rarer sight in the USA. After all, the President
Johnson's quid pro quo Chicken Tax cut their production short for
this side of the Atlantic. So, we get particularly excited when you
can find one so beautiful, especially when it's been treated to a
rotisserie restoration and all these killer custom touches. The
slick paint job was finished in 2013, and it's obvious by the extra
glow in the light green that dominates most of the laser straight
sheetmetal. The upper black of this two-tone is a thoughtful
application that not only draws attention to the dipping "V" in the
front, but also coordinates with the interior accents. Sectioned
and tucked bumpers fore and aft were painted to match the lower
body, Safari windows brighten the cab, brightly polished side
mirrors are at the flanks, and a shining VW emblem up front
complete a well-done total package. But as good as this looks, we
also love these Single Cabs for their versatility. Volkswagen was
quite clever at how to stack cargo, and that's why you can take
down any side of the bed for easy loading. Or you can even fold
down all sides and turn your pickup into a flatbed transporter. So
something this distinctive, and also still so useful, is great for
everything from promoting a business to a support vehicle for you
other classics. But it's all so darn nice, you'll probably only
being hauling trophies from show-to-show anyway.
The exterior black and light green color combination returns
inside, with a custom bench seat wrapped in a luxurious leather
pattern and matching door panels that look just as cool. Just like
the Type 2 Bus, these were great for giving the driver a commanding
view of the road through the Safari windows (the side window glass
is actually original!). Ahead of the driver is a large 3-spoke
wood-rimmed steering wheel, a single VDO gauge, and an easy to
reach gearshift that should feel a bit familiar to Beetle fans. Up
top the custom headliner is nice and taut, the black vinyl flooring
below is in great shape, and the retro-style modern radio in the
dash look awesome inside the beautifully painted dash. And since
this is a single-cab pickup, it's one of the rare classic trucks
that gives you the added utility to use the secure storage out
back.
In the rear is a 2332cc air cooled, four-cylinder Penthouse
aluminum motor that displaces a very respectable 200 horsepower.
It's a larger displacement than what came in this era, but it comes
as a welcome upgrade, because the knock on the Type 2 trucks and
buses was that they were always too underpowered from the North
American market. This new block solves that and then some. It has
upgrades everywhere you look, including dual Weber carburetors and
a performance intake that that helps this VW absolutely sing
through its custom exhaust. Remember, the flat-four is the motor
that brought the Beetle its global reputation for being
tough-as-nails, and this one has all that reliability with a lot
more much-needed power. And to have it in a pickup only adds to its
utility. That's why the rest of the world has used these for
everything from farm vehicles to medical transport. Plus, it's
linked to a sturdy and versatile four-speed manual transmission,
which allows you to get the most out of the motor. It's an
unbeatable package that provides robust and fun driving. A fully
adjustable transmission and disc brakes were added during the
rotisserie restoration, and set the stance on those slick custom
17-inch wheels wrapped in 195/40/17 front and 215/45/17 rear
performance radials.
You know these don't come up for sale too often in the USA, and
this one has been beautifully restored into a custom piece that
turns heads everywhere it goes. So, if you were looking for the
ultimate attention-grabber at any VW event or just parked outside
your business, you need to hurry to get this pickup. Call
