Vehicle Description
As General Motors' stalwart and devoutly focused truck brand, GMC
has produced years of tough and innovative workhorses that are
often completely overlooked by classic car investors. But, when it
comes to restoration, dedicated fans of the 'Professional Grade'
division have a rich legacy of preserving unique and exceptionally
well-done offerings that cause a big stir every time they roll out
of the garage. A proven platform that celebrates the uniqueness of
all-American performance, this sweet Typhoon capitalizes on GM's
solid engineering and GMC's innate exclusivity. And, whether you're
a diehard GMC fan, an old school truck lover or just a curious
buyer who's looking for something a bit different, it's a cool
classic that 'fires on all cylinders'!
WAIT, AREN'T ALL TYPHOONS BLACK?
After blowing the doors off the houses of many global sports cars
with their awesome Syclone pickup, GMC decided they'd just go ahead
and reign over everyone's performance parade with the superb
Typhoon SUV. And one of the biggest improvements the Typhoon
program added to the Syclone formula was expanded paint options.
This Typhoon, reflecting a collection of straight surfaces that are
scored by even gaps and textured by factory-correct trim, is one of
only 518 trucks dressed in Frost White and Gray for the 1992 model
year. And today, it rolls as one crisp and clean classic that's fit
to both drive and display!
TURBO TANK
GM's stalwart 4300 V6 has, through a myriad of engineering changes,
anchored the company's truck line for close to 40 years. For
Typhoon duty, the LB4 4300 saw significant mechanical upgrades.
Better pistons and better breathing intake and exhaust manifolds
joined a Mitsubishi TD06-17C turbocharger, a Garrett water/air
intercooler and a 48mm twin-bore throttle body that was borrowed
from Chevrolet's 5.7 liter V8. All those carefully calculated
tweaks and improvements added up to a very impressive 280
horsepower and 350 lb./ft. of V8-slaying torque. And that meant the
truck's strip-scorching times would not only best GM's own Camaro
and Corvette, but also catapult it to the forefront of 1990s
performance! Mechanically, everything, from this GMC's dry oil pan
to its pliable air tube, is clean, lean and largely weather-free.
And one glance at our high-resolution photos is all it takes to see
that the truck has been meticulously maintained by loving
enthusiasts.
A NIMBLE TANK, THAT IS...
With that kind of power on tap, it should come as no surprise that
GM equipped the bottom of this Jimmy with a host of noteworthy
upgrades. Behind the raucous engine, a reliable 4L60 automatic
makes the most of a factory 10-bolt that's finished with sporty,
3.42 gears. That gearbox twists torque to BorgWarner all-wheel
drive, which sends 35% of its power to the front wheels. Speaking
of front wheels, this truck's massive meats are pointed by factory
power steering. Speaking of power-assist, the truck's
power-assisted brake system, upfitted with slotted rotors, is one
of the first to be fully accompanied by standard anti-lock
technology. The truck's Typhoon-exclusive, self-leveling suspension
has been augmented with a rear sway bar and fresh Belltech shocks.
A factory catalytic converter leads upsized exhaust that's centered
on a modern Borla muffler. And power meets the pavement through
handsome factory alloys, which spin 245/50R16 Federal Super Steel
595s around monochromatic "GMC" logos.
SPEED AND COMFORT
Inside this clean cruiser, you'll find a comfy leather interior
that's loaded with features like power windows, power mirrors,
power door locks, climate control, Cruise Control and a tilting
steering wheel. In front of that wheel, "TYPHOON" branded buckets
are big and welcoming. Opposite those seats, a blocky dash frames
factory telemetry and modern JVC audio. And below that dash,
"TYPHOON" branded floor mats frame a small console and simple
factory shifter.
Nobody scoffs at GMC's Syclone and Typhoon. Thanks to their
Professional Grade DNA, and an ability to whip pretty much any
street challenger, the trucks get big respect and much admiration.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab this brutish SUV and enjoy one
of the coolest classics on the planet!
