Vehicle Description
1966 Ford Fairlane
The Ford Fairlane is an automobile model that was sold between 1955
and 1970 by Ford in North America. The name is derived from Henry
Ford's estate, Fair Lane, near Dearborn, Michigan. The Fairlane 500
is noted by a wider chrome trim on the side, and 3 bullet ports on
the rear quarter panel.
Well Sherman, let's get into the way back machine and set the year
for 1966 where we will travel to a wondrous place called the
Classic Auto Mall where we will find ourselves plunked in the
hallowed halls of this renewed mall, and we will be standing in
front of a 1966 Ford Fairlane 500 XL. This particular car has had a
professional engine overhaul, a transmission refresh, some new
paint and various and other sundry replacement parts put on during
the restoration.
Exterior
Now watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat...OOPS a 66
Fairlane...wrong hat...but i digress and looking towards the past
and our 66 Fairlane which is bathed in beautifully polished maroon.
Trimming it out is plenty of mirror-like chrome and brite-work,
straight steel, and nicely minded gaps. The hood has a nifty scoop
on top, and the consigner tells me that there is another hood that
will come with the car. Chrome window surrounds are all buttoned up
and presenting in very nice shiny condition. Protruding stacked
quad headlights inject a leaping-forward attitude, with tall
vertical rectangular taillights, upswept quarter panels, and
15-inch Torque Thrust wheels add to the illusion of speed. This
two-door hardtop displays a sweeping semi-fastback roofline. Noted
are early signs of some body rust on the lower panels and rockers,
although it is not invasive.
Interior
Humble? that's me...Mr. Modesty. When it comes to humility, I'm the
greatest. And we swing the door open to reveal a newly restored
interior. All in black door panels, cranks and handles are very
nice, as are the dual front buckets also draped in black vinyl. A
chromed metal surround at the back of these buckets, and we are
looking like new. The original dash is present, and a few
aftermarket gauges have been added. One of the highlights inside
here is the 2-tone steering wheel which jumps back and forth as you
spin around it with alternating maroon and black, the two colors
delineated by a chrome ring. Clean black carpet covers the floors,
and an automatic shifter is sitting on the hump. Bringing up the
rear is a nicely done rear bench that has not seen many people
sitting in it ...it's that good. Above is a black headliner which
is nice and tight.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and we shake hands with a totally restored 289ci
V8. This mill is topped by a single Holley 4-barrel carburetor,
with a Weiand intake. On back is an AOD 4-speed automatic which
throws power rearward to a Ford 8-inch 2.80 geared axle. And there
are some words from Mr. Know it all.
Undercarriage
Showing some surface rust, a structurally sound undercarriage is
seen. A new fuel tank has been installed, new brakes, brake lines,
shocks springs and ball joints. Drum brakes are on all 4
corners.
Drive-Ability
Turning the key this car fired right up, idled smoothly, and a
flick of the gearshift lever and we were off to the test track. A
nice cruiser, good handling, and quick stopping are all nice assets
to have in a car. We can note that the heater, horn and radio were
inoperable on our jaunt.
With loads of recent work and OEM replacement parts, new paint, and
are interior we are looking at a very nice example of a 66 Fairlane
XL. A beautifully restored engine and engine bay, and you are in
for a turnkey car that you can drive right out of the mall and have
years of enjoyment. How about that Dahlink?
