Amazing restoration and attention to detail went into turning this
beautiful 1956 Chevrolet into a period-correct American muscle car.
Representing the ultimate choice for a '50s style Tri-Five hot rod,
the Bel Air was Chevrolet's lightest model and a favorite choice
for modifications to increase power and speed. This Bel Air
two-door post is owned by the family of Jim Perkins, an icon known
throughout the automotive industry as an innovative and dynamic
leader. Perkins was the General Manager of Chevrolet Motor
Division, Vice President of General Motors as well as serving as
the Chief Executive Officer of Hendrick Automotive Group. Always
wanting to improve on performance Mr. Perkins made sure this Bel
Air would not disappoint. The heart of this machine is a purpose
built 1969 350 cubic-inch V8 assembled with a Traco steel crank and
forged pistons as well as ported and polished cylinder heads.
Topping off the small block is a '69 Z/28 intake manifold, Corvette
dual-point distributor system and a Crane cam and rockers
combination. All of this power is transferred to the pavement
courtesy of a '68 Z/28 close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission and
a Chevrolet 10-bolt rear axle with 3.70 posi-traction gears.
Originally restored in India Ivory over Matador Red, this car was
freshened up in 2003. Beyond its excellent restoration, it features
all the essential hot rod improvements of the time, such as a
period-correct Sun tachometer, under-dash coolant temp, battery
volts and oil pressure gauges and of course the fabled Hurst
shifter. Custom upgrades include power front disc brakes with 11
rotors and power steering for every day comfort and drivability.
This car was featured in the spring 2004 edition of the Rodder's
Journal as part of a 16- page story on the life Jim Perkins and his
