Vehicle Description
2003 BMW Z4 Roadster
The first generation of the Z3 was based on a previous platform and
had its problems...Enter the 2003 Z4, an entirely new car from the
ground up, with every element, save the engine, rethought and
redefined. It's not just a new skin on the outside, it's a
redesigned rear suspension for much better feedback and handling, a
longer wheelbase, and a larger cabin.
For consignment the first-year version of the Z4. A total redesign
with an overall lighter weight, machine age simple functionality on
the interior placement of levers and knobs, and a convertible. You
are nearly into the driver's seat, or at least being harkened!
Exterior
Using sculpted curved lines like the hood line magically running
through the front quarter right above the headlights then taking a
downward plunge to the rocker and creating a cove on the doors then
ascending towards the rear quarter where it disappears onto the top
of the rear fender. Dual grille openings are quintessential BMW
design, and the flanking integrated headlights drive that home. A
rounded aerodynamic front as well as a bulbous rear deck complete
with integrated spoiler and rear bumper and ladies and gentlemen we
have ourselves a sports car. A nearly perfect cloth black
convertible moves up and down electronically with ease, and when
down reveals the dual roll bars behind each interior bucket seat.
All this bathed in Sterling Gray Metallic which is a beautiful
contrast to the black top. Large 18-inch wheels drip BMW design and
offer up a center badged hub. Small but mighty.
Interior
Moving to the inside a mixture of leather stitched panels with
black molded textured plastic, dances with brushed aluminum and
creates the machined look on the door panels. Moving inside we see
high back buckets in black leather smooth and shiny and the drivers
bucket showing slight wear. Plenty of seat controls and memory
button on the side to get it just right baby bear. An aluminum
center console races past the seats toward the dash, and houses
power window buttons, a sport shifter, and top control buttons. The
dash front utilizes a combination of textured molded plastic in
black and brushed aluminum panels. In front of the driver is a
large arched dash front which has dual analog gauges in deep coves
within the arch. These gauges have digital readouts and there are
several warning lights in the field which separates these dual
circles. A central air vent and control panel is embedded onto the
aluminum and has a red display to all its controls along with a CD
player slot. Black carpet covers the floors and looks like new.
Drivetrain
German engineering loves to streamline everything with panels that
cover all aspects of a car, and this engine bay is no exception. A
very clean electronic fuel injected 3.0 liter inline 6-cylinder is
neatly placed into the clean engine bay. A 5-speed Steptronic
transmission is strapped to the back of the power plant.
Undercarriage
More straight rust free panels to give some ground effect aero to
this car is seen, along with a solid unibody, stainless steel
exhaust, and power disc brakes all around. Front strut suspension
is seen with center link and cast aluminum upper transverse links
for the rear.
Drive-Ability
As expected, this was a thrill ride for sure, from the time I lit
the candles throughout the test track this car was up to par on
every check box. Good acceleration, nice handling, and snappy
cornering, along with a smooth cruise, it's definitely a nice
example.
With a mere 53,441 original miles, always garaged in winter, well
maintained by a local BMW dealership, and handled with kid gloves,
if you are into some German engineering without the expense of a
Mercedes-Benz, then hurry on down to Classic Auto Mall for this
small slice of Bavaria.
