Vehicle Description
2003 Jaguar XKR Convertible
The Jaguar is a compact and well-muscled animal. It is the largest
cat native to the Americas and the third largest in the world,
exceeded in size by the tiger and the lion. Its coat is generally a
tawny yellow, but ranges to reddish-brown, for most of the body. It
is at the top of the food chain and has incredible speed.
For consignment utilizing design cues from the E types, and adding
a supercharger, modern suspension and a drop top, and we now have
the best of both worlds for this car. Low original miles (41,458)
some recent major repairs to the convertible top, and transmission
redux, but otherwise all original, this car definitely performs
like its namesake.
Exterior
Anthracite Metallic paint original from the factory covers this
car's straight steel panels, although the overall design utilizes
nary a straight line on this cat toy. Viewing the car from a
straight frontal angle, it even looks like it's just growling at
you. New lines utilize integrated everything including the front
fenders, headlights nearly oval hood and parking lighting. This
carries through to the back of the car with a long swooping rear
quarter panel and again use of integrated rear tail lighting.
Bumpers are now body matching and you barely notice them. A rakish
black canvas convertible top sporting a glass rear window keeps the
line going, however this writer prefers the top to be in the down
position. 18-inch 5 spoke wheels have low profile tires and the
hits just keep on coming looks wise.
Interior
Dove leather, (off white), covers the curvaceous buckets that
appear to have concentric pools of water for the inserts, flank a
curved center console with burl lacquered wood accenting, and a
storage glovebox. There are an additional 2 plus 2 rear seats but
if you are over 3 feet tall, you may find them hard to get into.
Moving our eye upward and forward more burl candy for the
instrument cluster, and navi screen that sleeps as a digital
version of an analog handed clock. Patches of stitched dove leather
are surrounding the burl, and all is very clean and original here.
Noted is the gated shift lever which the driver can choose to use
on fully automatic or a sport mode which you shift through the
gears with no clutch. Nice black carpet floods the floors and is
presenting beautifully on this all original car.
Drivetrain
You might say the cat's meow on this 4.2 Liter Supercharged V8 puts
out a respectable 390 horses. It has electronic fuel injection, and
a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission. The rear axle has a 3.06 final
drive ratio.
Undercarriage
At first you may be fooled into the notion that you are looking
into a typical mild-mannered car with the typical suspension. Well
I'll tell you for free you are definitely not as this cat is
equipped with sport tuned computer active technology suspension
(aptly acronymed as CATS). A fully independent suspension with twin
wishbones, coil springs with adaptive telescopic dampers. There is
an anti dive geometry providing longitudinal stability under heavy
braking. Throw on an anti roll bar, and you are rolling on rails.
The rear also sports CATS but has a fully independent suspension
with lower wishbones, and drive shafts acting as upper links. It
too has coil springs with adaptive telescopic dampers and another
roll bar. Power disc brakes tame this speed demon, and along with
the aforementioned suspension, bring you to a quick and safe anti
skid stop.
Drive-Ability
I'd have to say one of my favorite cars I've personally driven
during my tenure at Classic Auto Mall. Starting with seats that
suck you in to all the adjustments one needs to be perfectly
situated ergonomically. I fired this rocket ship up, and it was
truly blast off. Due to the active suspension and road dampening
noise insulation, you literally have no idea how fast you are
traveling as it's so comfortable. Awesome exhilarating acceleration
and a really smooth ride. I did not feel like I was in a sports
car. I'm a sucker for British sports cars, but I'd throw all the
earlier stuff in the trash to have this very special car. I did
notice the tilt steering wheel needed some coaxing to move around,
but it eventually got there.
A wonderful modern example of British sports car engineering and
you can literally get it fixed at your local Ford dealer. Low
miles, neck snapping power and on the rails handling that is off
the charts, this is will give more exotic sports cars a run for
their money.
