transfer case, Dana 44 front axle and either an AMC 20 or Dana 44
rear axle with Trac-Lok limited-slip differential Air-conditioning,

intermittent wipers 109-inch wheelbase and 6,200 GVWR Alloy wheels
and fog lights ?Only in a Jeep? but what if you don?t want or need
a CJ? What about a Grand Wagoneer? MotoeXotica Classic Cars is
pleased to present this example from 1986. At that time, it was the
longest-running, domestically produced vehicle (24 years) on the
same platform. Marketed as a station wagon, the pioneering design
created the luxury 4x4 niche and became known in time as a ?sport
utility vehicle? (SUV). Jeep has a knack for creating iconic
vehicles, and among them the Wagoneer might be the grandest?if
nothing else, the largest. Introduced in 1963, it paved the way for
the SUV as we now know it. The Wagoneer was built from 1962 to
1991, an epic 29-year run that's unimaginable today. Later it would
return as a high-end trim level, and Jeep is currently working on
reviving it as its three-row flagship. Made in American Motors
Corporation?s Toledo, Ohio factory, this example is finished in
Medium Blue Metallic (code AJ) with the customary woodgrain
appliqu?s on the sides and rear. The paint and trim are in overall
very good condition while this senior Jeep?s bodywork is straight.
The engine bay is extremely tidy, the Autocraft battery appears new
and the chrome bumpers are in good, original order. This Grand
Wagoneer rolls on BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A radials, size
255/75R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a factory alloy
wheel with gold-colored inlays. The wheels are in good condition
while the tires are in very good order. This Jeep has a 109-inch
wheelbase and carries a 6,200 gross vehicle weight rating. Under
the hood is AMC?s 360 CID V-8 engine bolted to Chrysler?s famous
TorqueFlite A727 three-speed automatic transmission. With this
drivetrain is AMC?s Selec-Trac four-wheel-drive with a New Process
228 transfer case, a Dana 44 front axle and either an AMC 20 or
Dana 44 rear axle (1986 models used either unit, depending on
production sequence). There is also a Trac-Lok limited-slip
differential. Selec-Trac has a dash-mounted control that allowed
the driver to change between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. The
switch activated a vacuum-activated spline clutch that was built
into the transfer case that engaged the front axle assembly. A
shift lever mounted on the side of the transmission hump allowed
the driver to shift between four-high and four-low with the vehicle
moving, although the transmission had to be shifted to neutral and
the vehicle had to be moving at less than five miles per hour to
accomplish this. Driver convenience features were plentiful ?
air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows,
power locks, power front seats, cruise control, tilt steering
column, rear defroster and intermittent wipers. Inside, the Honey
leather interior is in overall very good condition. The front and
rear seats offer spacious accommodations and the front has a
fold-down center armrest and the matching carpet is in good
condition. The headliner appears almost immaculate, the factory
two-spoke steering wheel looks good. It has a GM-sourced steering
column and ancillary components (turn signal lever, tilt steering
control lever and the column-mounted gearshift lever). The
instrument panel offers a full array of gauges and is in good order
but the radio and the air conditioner are inoperable. The inner
door panels are in good condition. The rear cargo area offers 74.5
feet of space with the rear seat folded. A JVC AM/FM stereo with
cassette deck completes the interior. Starting in the 1986 model
year, the Grand Wagoneer received a new four-part front grille and
a stand-up hood ornament. An updated audio system became a standard
feature and a power sunroof installed by American Sunroof
Corporation, became a factory option. However, the most significant
change was the installation of a fully revamped interior including
a new dashpad, new instrumentation, new door panel design, shorter
nap cut-pile carpeting, new leather and corduroy seat cover designs
and front seats that now featured adjustable headrests. Changes
were made to the instrument panel that now featured square gauges
and contained an improved climate control system. The metal glove
box door was also replaced with a plastic door featuring a
woodgrain overlay. A new two-spoke steering wheel also included new
stalks for the lights and wiper and washer controls on the column.
The Selec-Trac driveline gained a new Trac-Lok limited slip
differential to send power to the wheel with the best traction.
Jeep raved that, although sharing a pickup truck chassis, the
Wagoneer had a sophisticated station wagon body design that was
more carlike than any other 4x4 on the market. Four-by-four
competition to this Jeep in 1986 included Chevrolet?s K5 Blazer,
Dodge?s Ramcharger, Ford?s Bronco and GMC?s K5 Jimmy. The Wagoneer
made its debut seven years before Land Rover launched its Range
Rover in Great Britain, 18 years before the four-door and 24 years
before that upscale marque appeared in the US as a 1987 model. Stop
