Vehicle Description
1972 Chevrolet C-10 Pickup
Although the C10 most commonly identifies as the half-ton,
short-bed pickup, it came in different styles. The C10 featured a
115-inch wheelbase for the pickup equipped with the 6.5-foot bed
and a 127-inch wheelbase for models with the 8-foot bed. Chevy sold
pickups as a chassis and cab that required buyers to custom fit
their choice of beds. Other styles featured the Fleetside, or flat
panel cargo box, and the Stepside, which had the rear wheels
outside the bed and a step mounted between the cab and wheel wells.
C10 models also included a panel truck and the Suburban sport
utility vehicle.
For consignment and right out of 1972, a clean mostly rust free
shortbed with plenty of performance mods, a sweet paint job, and
retaining its mostly original look. Oh, and let's throw on some
pinstripe flames to add a bit of "jazz" to this preferred year
iconic pickup...the C-10.
Exterior
Resprayed in Orange Matte and clear coated with clear coated
pinstriped flames coming from the front of this truck and licking
rearward through the door panels. The front is very clean in the
grille department with pristine straight horizontal ribs running
from headlight to headlight and framed with a mirror like bumper
below. A nice bowtie emblem in red is in the center. Running up the
hood we see a scoop bump facing the windshield, which is now
wrapped in black trim. This scoop sports a 327 badge and butts up
to a nicely done metal passenger cab on this exterior. Straight
door panels with slight rust bubbling on the bottoms and on the
rockers is noted but could easily be remediated. A short bed leads
us rearward where another mirror like bumper frames the bottom of
the Chevrolet badged gate and flanking taillights in their original
form. Pull down the gate and we have a bed lined with texture bed
liner paint, and no dents or significant faults underneath this
paint. A Shocktop cooler is bolted to the front of the bed where it
meets the cab. 15-inch standard Chevy truck wheels are all around,
and the rear of this truck is bagged for a lowered stance...and
looking dy-no-mite!
Interior
A black vinyl bench reaches for each door panel and has a new added
custom center console complete with a storage area and cupholders
breaking up the bench at the center. The original dash sits proudly
in front of the seat and noted is an aftermarket tachometer added
to the center of the column. Located in the center is a metal panel
with a radio, temp controls, and a trio of aftermarket gauges
hanging below this painted orange panel. Fronting it all is the
original steering wheel, and below black carpet complete with floor
mats which are also thick carpet and nice looking. Above is an
orange headliner in matching exterior painted metal.
Drivetrain
Courtesy of a Camaro, a newly rebuilt 327ci V8 sporting a mild cam
inside, and Holley Street Avenger carb feeding it atop. Hedman
headers, an aluminum radiator, and a TH400 3-speed automatic
transmission with an external cooler unit is on back. A 12-bolt
rear with a chromed cover is noted.
Undercarriage
Looking just fine underneath with solid frame and richer panels, we
see on one body hanger some rust bubbles, and an invasive holes but
is retaining strong. Airbags are seen, and some new steering
components have been added in the form of the use of Moog parts, a
pitman arm, tie rod ends, a new power steering pump and steering
gear box.
Drive-Ability
This truck was a true driver shuttling our consigners to and fro
from the shore on long weekends. So we figured it would have no
problem on our Classic Auto Mall test track, and indeed it did not.
It started right up with a thunderous growl and ran terrifically.
Plenty of power, nice handling and power steering that floats like
a butterfly, and an engine that sings like a bee.
A good overall job with a few areas of some rust bubbling, but you
have to study this truck hard to see it all and it is sparsely
positioned. A Camaro 327ci V8, new steering, bagged rear
suspension, and a thunderous roar, you can ride down the road and
have heads turning.
