When someone says "vintage 4x4," your brain probably goes right to
thinking "Jeep." However, during the same time period as the Jeep
was being developed and gaining in popularity, Toyota was
developing their own off-road workhorse. The Toyota FJ40 finally
came to fruition in 1960 after over a decade of other 4x4 Toyota
vehicles. While the previous Toyota 4x4s were useful, the FJ40 Land
Cruiser was an instant hit that gained popularity similar to that
of the Jeep CJs.
This 1978 Toyota FJ40 has survived quite well, as most of them
succumbed to extreme abuse as the workhorses they were. The
exterior has some defects here and there, but they all tell a story
and really add to the rugged look of this FJ. Equipped with a
sturdy off-road bumper and winch, it is clear this Toyota means
business and is ready to go wherever you want it to take you.
Sitting on a set of KMD XC Rockstar wheels, this FJ40 has a mean
look to it.
The interior is nothing more than it ever was from the factory:
simple, basic, and rugged. The front seats have been replaced with
black racing bucket seats, while the folding rear seats appear to
be OEM or OEM-style. The rear seats face each other, rather than
forward, which is just one of the fun and unique features these
FJ40s have. A rollcage is in place for safety during your topless
four-wheel adventures. There is no radio, but that's not exactly a
necessity when you're offroad! Besides, you wouldn't want to worry
about radio theft when you park it somewhere with the top off. The
ignition cylinder has been removed in lieu of a racecar-style
ignition toggle switch.
Under the hood is a correct Toyota inline six-cylinder. While you
won't be winning any drag races in this vehicle, it is a reliable
choice for a torquey off-road engine. This is a Toyota after all!
Hooked up to a 4-speed manual transmission, this Toyota is truly a
bare-bones workhorse that is prepared for any rugged activity you
throw at it. It runs and drives great, and is ready to hit the
trails!
If you're looking for a unique 4x4, but don't want a Jeep or other
SUV, this Toyota may just hit the mark. It isn't afraid of a rough
trail or a few scratches, and you shouldn't be afraid to use it for
its intended purpose. That's what it was built for! Don't miss out
on this chance to own a rugged piece of 4x4 history.
