Vehicle Description
Having been safely stowed away for quite some time after a thorough
restoration, this 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 is in great form,
ready to begin its next chapter serving some very lucky new owner.
This is a really clean example of the coveted Chevy muscle car
model in genuine first generation Super Sport form, with no badging
sleight of hand involved. It wears its original factory colors both
inside and out and harbors a vital, numbers-matching powerplant
that stands eagerly by, awaiting action.
This model had been a proven success for Chevy since it was
introduced a few years earlier as its first foray into the muscle
car wars that had gripped the industry, but its manufacturer wasn't
content to rest on its laurels, defying what was then conventional
automotive wisdom by making some pretty substantial styling changes
just a year before this '67 closed out its first generation of
Chevelles. The added refinement to the body contours, a gradually
sloping rear roofline and a markedly broader front grille and
bumper were all part and parcel of their efforts, resulting in a
vital, capable street machine with decidedly more modern style than
its predecessors. The factory-issue Butternut Yellow paint it wears
confers a thorough and vibrant authenticity and still offers a nice
deep shine and, with an assembly of clean, unspoiled chrome and a
fresh-looking black vinyl top on board, this is one sharp
classic.
The black vinyl interior remains in its original factory
configuration and, thanks to a restoration just before heading off
to storage, has come through the decades looking pretty darned
good. You'll find a host of components that still appear
practically unused inside, including both the front buckets and
rear bench seat, the door panels and headliner, as well as the
matching black carpet lining the floor. The dash pad was likely
replaced at some point, as it's nice and level, with no splits in
sight. Below, the instrument panel offers an assortment of factory
gauges joined by an aftermarket tachometer perched just above one
of the factory air conditioning vents - the system itself blows
nice and strong, but will need a Freon charge to regain top form.
There's a spacious trunk area in back - even with a full-size spare
inside, there'll be plenty of luggage room for any weekend getaways
you might plan and this classic features a running condition that's
plenty strong enough to make those outings a reality.
Beneath the hood, a 396 cubic inch V8 was likely rebuilt while the
rest of the car was receiving the attention needed to return it to
top form and, fed by a 4 barrel carb, propels this classic with
enthusiasm. This is one impressive drivetrain - the engine starts
up without hesitation and the accompanying 3 speed automatic
transmission shifts as smoothly as you could want. The engine sits
in a nicely maintained compartment, surrounded by fresh hoses and
belts. While rear leaf springs were pretty much the norm when this
'67 rolled out, it has springs in the back, so the ride it offers
is quiet and free of binding around corners. Power steering makes
for easy maneuverability, while power brakes offer easy stops as
this evocative classic cruises on a set of 17" aftermarket wheels.
Its stance is totally in keeping with its performance-centric
heritage - raised just a tad to confer the aftermarket attention
that's been heaped upon it.
