For the buyers who were in the market for a convertible in 1971,
there was no finer choice in the world than the 280 SE 3.5
cabriolet. It was the fastest, most lavish, and most expensive
convertible offered by Mercedes-Benz - arguably the finest
automobile manufacturer in the world at the time. In addition to
the mechanically advanced and uprated V8 engine, inside the car,
passengers are treated to the level of understated elegance that
one would expect in a car of this caliber. Burled walnut dashboards
and sumptuous leather seating ensured that the passengers not only
drove in style, but in utmost comfort. Nineteen seventy-one was the
only year that this model was imported into the U.S., with just 802
reported entering the U.S. Mercedes would not build another
four-place convertible for over 20 years.
Offered here is a U.S.-delivery 3.5L, column-shifted automatic in
cabriolet form. 002151 was completed in July of 1970 wearing Medium

Within the last decade, the Low-Grill Cabriolet has received a
number of cosmetic and mechanical services, freshening and
restorative work. Overall, the car presents quite well with very
nice finishes, excellent panel fit and impressive road manners. The
luxurious cabin features cold air conditioning, power windows and
radio, complemented by custom Coco mats across the interior and
trunk - paired to a matching top boot cover for open motoring. The
leather seating was reupholstered in 2008 and wood refinished by
Madera Concepts in 2014, while correct Medium Blue Metallic paint
was applied in years past. A set of top latch handles in slip case
reside in the glove compartment. All lights, gauges and safety
equipment operate as they should, including new inch Maxxis
whitewall tires, wiper blades and Mercedes-Benz battery. The
current mileage of 36,000 is believed to be original. Driving this
incredibly plush and contemporary car will truly spoil your classic
car outlook.
The undercarriage appears very solid, with spot welds visible
throughout the vehicle and structural integrity. Both engine and
luggage compartments display correct and bright finishes, along
with decals, plaques and tags. The Mercedes' original engine
116.980.12.001878 remains in place, as does its 111.027.12.002151
fender / chassis stamping. The rear trunk contains a correct vinyl
mat, car cover in custom bag, original tool roll, spare assembly
and emergency accessories.
