to become more sophisticated, more polished and more refined. One
of those fans, a Texan by the name of Carroll Shelby, spent most of
his life building a well-deserved reputation for serious
performance and record setting speed. And even at the fiery age of
89, he was STILL inspiring enthusiasts to push their creations to
the point of borderline unbelievable. It seems only fitting that
Ford and Shelby American would eventually renew their decades
abandoned push to dominate the performance car world. And this
supercharged 67-mile GT500KR, one of only 1,011 produced in 2008,
is a perfect example of why that partnership is a match made in

FORD BLACK WITH SHELBY FLASH
One of only 328 2008 GT500KRs produced in Ford Black 2-stage with
monochromatic Shelby stripes, this spotless Mustang has spent the
majority of its life parked in dry storage. And thanks to a noted
aversion to water and heat, the car maintains factory-fresh
aesthetics that would be right at home in a dealer's showroom.
Always a southern car, this Mustang met its first, Texas-based
owner through Cheraw, South Carolina's Griffin Ford. The second and
present owner, a resident of lower Virginia, purchased the car in
October of 2013, only to drive it around his block once a week
before finally applying for a Title in August of 2019. The
reasoning behind that application: to clear his garage for a 2020
Shelby GT500.
Because the GT500KR package carried a hefty premium, Dearborn
designers focused on creating a nouveau icon that looks tailored
and substantial in comparison to 'lesser' competitors. At the front
of the car, a familiar Mustang grille hangs an offset Cobra emblem
between pristine headlights, a carbon fiber splitter and a sculpted
valance that's complete with traditional fog lamps. At the top of
that grille, a pinned Super Snake hood centers broad "S H E L B Y"
lettering in front of color-keyed heat extractors and factory
glass. At the base of that glass, Satin Black rockers anchor tough
Shelby emblems under carbon-capped mirrors. And behind of those
mirrors, a correct standard-issue spoiler joins an aggressive
Shelby splitter to frame clean taillights, a bold "S H E L B Y"
trunk script and a Super Snake-exclusive faux fuel filler.
MOD MOTOR MOJO
The reborn GT500 celebrated one of the most successful partnerships
in performance car history. Take a look under this KR's carbon
fiber hood and you'll find a supercharged 'mod motor' that was
heavily influenced by Ford's first GT super car. And what's better:
by utilizing a cast iron block, aluminum heads, forged internals
and dual overhead camshafts, this rowdy torque monster makes great
power while mixing surprising efficiency with a docile nature.
Twist the key and the big V8 rumbles to life, breathing through a
Ford Racing Cold Air Kit, a Shelby H-pipe and throaty Ford Racing
mufflers. Goose the throttle to engage a roots-style supercharger
that, with the help of Pro-Cal Performance Calibration, creates a
hearty 540 horsepower. Deliver one serious jab to the go-pedal, and
you'll find out why dictionaries are starting to list the name
"Carroll Shelby" under the word "performance". Aesthetically, this
Ford's spotless bay looks assembly line-fresh, eschewing the kind
flash you'd expect from such a pedigreed car for, dare I say, a bit
of a 'sleeper' vibe. But to anyone who knows anything about
performance, the big blower, subtle Shelby badging, machined Shelby
caps and silver "POWERED BY SVT" cam covers are a dead giveaway
that they're looking at something real special!
NOT EVEN DIRTY
As most performance car fans already know, this Mustang's SVT-tuned
chassis is nothing short of excellent. Behind the smooth engine, a
slick-shifting Tremec TR6060 6-speed spins power to an 8.8-inch
limited-slip axle that's fitted with big, 3.73 gears. At the
corners of the car, power-assisted Brembo calipers join
power-assisted Ford calipers in squeezing big, vented rotors. Turns
come courtesy of Ford's super-efficient power rack-and-pinion
steering. Naturally, Ford's standard ABS and traction control
systems are present and accounted for. And all this first class
agility rides on forged Shelby kicks, which twist 255/45ZR18
Goodyear Eagle F1s in front of 285/40ZR18 Goodyear Eagle F1s.
FORD BLACK WITH SHELBY FLASH, TOO
Inside this Ford, bolstered, Shelby-branded seats, which feature
standard power adjustment for the car's driver, ride opposite a
monochromatic, leather-wrapped steering wheel that's adorned with
convenient thumb buttons. The dash is a familiar Mustang layout,
which frames a small Shelby plaque and satin-trimmed
instrumentation. Below that dash, an optional Shaker 1000 stereo
combines MP3 compatibility with a 6-disc CD changer. Below that
stereo, a Ford Racing Short-Throw Shifter leads an impressive
console that, like the aforementioned steering wheel, is detailed
in red French Stitching. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd
expect in a high dollar modern car are ready and waiting, including
cruise control, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors and
Remote Keyless Entry.
Even without its natural exclusivity, this hot coupe would satisfy
virtually any performance enthusiast. With plenty of power and
nearly universal appeal, it's hard to think of a more desirable
modern pony car. Add in the Shelby name and exceptionally low
mileage, and this thoroughbred starts looking like a great
