Vehicle Description
Harboring upgraded power under its hood and outfitted with an array
of aftermarket add-ons to provide both outstanding road readiness
and plenty of capability both on and off the asphalt, this 1973
Jeep CJ5 is an outstanding representation of the brand during its
less adorned, purpose driven era. This classic is completely dialed
in, mechanically speaking, and has been thoroughly restored to top
form.
While the Jeep name has deep roots in military usage, the CJ5's
lineage is more direct than most of the other models, its
aesthetics and overall configuration having been substantially
influenced by its predecessors that provided no-nonsense,
dependable transportation during the Korean War. As the '70s
arrived, the front end was lengthened to accommodate more
substantial engines - a feature that pays direct dividends in this
specimen's case - while the compact wheelbase received only a
slight enlargement, so that its obstacle clearing abilities were
left intact. Clad in sharp black paint, with the crisp Renegade
lettering on its hood merging with diamond plate rocker covers over
color-matched step bars and bumpers both fore and aft, this CJ5 has
a very finished appearance. Its exterior alignment is as precise as
you could want, with body panels that blend together well, and
there's a well-fitted soft top with doors included for protection
during more challenging weather.
The interior sports a refurbished look while retaining its stock
configuration. A pair of high-backed Bestop bucket seats sit in
place of the originals and appear nearly new, with little sign of
wear on their vinyl surfaces. Below, the floor and rear storage
area have been well-treated with spray in protective liner and the
absence of carpet makes for much easier cleaning after off-road
adventures. An aftermarket Grant steering wheel is now perched on
the upgraded SST tilt column that also positions an Autometer
tachometer nearby and the instrument panel just beyond it features
a collection of new gauges and is surrounded by the shiny black
steel of the dash. A quality audio experience comes via the added
Blauplunkt AM/FM/CD stereo that can be navigated via remote.
The 350 cubic inch V8 now on board beneath the hood sits in a
well-maintained compartment and offers substantially more
displacement than any of the available powerplant selections during
this CJ5's era. Having been further enhanced with a well-chosen
array of upgrades, it offers ample power that really makes driving
this classic a lot of fun. It's fed by a Summit Street/Strip
carburetor perched on an Edelbrock intake manifold and exhales into
a pair of aftermarket headers leading out to a 2-" exhaust that
terminates in a pair of Flowmaster mufflers, providing an awesome,
mean sound. Nicely dressed in a pair of chrome valve covers and
matching air cleaner, the engine pairs with a 3-speed manual
transmission that shifts without issue, while four wheel drive
agility pairs with this CJ5's considerable ground clearance and
compact wheelbase to easily surmount obstacles. An added
thermostatically controlled electric fan and aluminum radiator
ensure temperatures stay within range and a host of components -
including the master cylinder, power steering pump and gearbox,
wiring harness and fuel pump - were all recently replaced to up
dependability. With both power steering and power disc brakes at
all four corners, the road manners this ride offers are top notch
in any driving environment. This rugged classic conquers terrain on
a set of 15" alloy wheels outfitted with 33x12.50R15 Dick Cepek
Trail Country EXP tires.
