Cars at this 1970 Mercury Cougar Standard Convertible (VIN code
92); a seldom-seen car almost 50 years on. There were only 2,322
examples made in 1970. This has been a one owner family owned car
from new, with the current owner since 2004 (15 years). This one
was made in Ford?s Dearborn, Michigan (VIN code F) facility, toward
the last third of the model year, according to the VIN. It was
delivered to the St. Louis, Missouri area (DSO 42) where it has
remained for nearly the past half-century! The Wimbledon White
paint (code M) is in overall very good order, with only minor
blemishes visible at close range. The car has solid and straight
bodywork, the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body and only show
minor imperfections. The engine bay is in good, original order and
the battery is clean. The black, power-folding top with a rear
glass window, is in good original order but does show some minor
blemishes associated with age. This cat rolls on bias-play
whitewalls, size 205/75B14 at all four corners. Each tire is
mounted to a steel wheel topped with a factory wire wheel cover.
The tires and wheels are all in good, original order. Underneath
the hood with the ?electric shaver? centerpiece is a 351 CID
Cleveland V-8 engine with two-barrel carburetor (code H). Backing
that motor is a FMX three-speed automatic transmission (code X) and
3.00:1 gearing (code 6). Driver convenience features include
air-conditioning, power steering and power brakes with discs in
front. Note, the A/C compressor does not engage. Mercury continued
one of the Cougar?s trick features, borrowed from Ford?s
Thunderbird, the sequential rear turn signal lights. Inside, the
car?s original black interior is overall good, original shape. The
high-back front bucket seats, the rear bench and the carpet all
appear in age-appropriate condition. A three-spoke steering wheel
faces the drive while the black inner door panel and matching
instrument panel are in good order. The gauge faces are somewhat
hazy, however. The center console and floor-mounted transmission
shifter look good and the car has its factory AM/FM radio. Mercury
joined the ponycar race three years after the Mustang with the
Cougar. However, Mercury sought to differentiate itself from its
cousin, aiming for a more luxury appearance and feel as it used
higher quality materials and a different body and interior. For
1970, the Cougar appearance was similar to the 1969 model but
changes were made. A new front end featured a pronounced center
hood extension and electric shaver grille similar to the 1967 and
1968 Cougars. Federally mandated locking steering columns appeared
inside and high-backed bucket seats, similar to those included in
the 1969 Eliminator package, became standard on all Cougars. Other
changes included revised tail light bezels, new front bumper and
front fender extensions, and larger, recessed side markers. The 351
CID ?Cleveland? V-8 was now available for the first time, though
both the Cleveland and Windsor engines were available as the base
model two-barrel engine. New options for the 1970 Cougar were
interior upholstery and vinyl top in bold houndstooth check
patterns. Convertible competition to this Cougar in 1970 included
Buick?s Skylark, Dodge?s Challenger, Ford?s Torino, Oldsmobile?s
Cutlass Supreme and Pontiac?s LeMans. If you?re looking for a
classic three-season cruiser, something that only needs a small
amount of TLC to keep purring or if you?re after a foundation for
your next garage project, you should do yourself a favor and check
