Vehicle Description
Introduced in 1936 as a replacement for the Series 60, the Buick
Century was an instant hit. What makes the first generation Century
unique is the fact that it is essentially a combination of both the
Buick Special and Roadmaster. The Roadmaster straight-eight engine
was used under the hood, while the Special body made up the rest.
This 1940 Buick Century is a beautiful example in what appears to
be largely original condition.
It isn't often one comes across a 79-year-old car in such largely
original condition. It has been in the hands of the current owner
for nearly a decade, and upon purchasing it he was told it has
never seen a full restoration. The paint appears to be original; if
it isn't, it is certainly decades old. The body has just the right
amount of small nicks and dings to give it character and help to
tell its story of survival. Finished in black, a forever classic
pre-war look, this stately sedan is a beautiful survivor.
The interior looks to be finished in mostly, if not all, original
materials. Much of the original simulated wood-grain is intact; a
pre-war design element that is both costly and difficult to
replicate. All of the soft materials are in remarkable shape, if
you take into account that it is nearly 80 years old. The back seat
looks almost new! The original radio has been recently rebuilt, and
operates as expected. This is a comfortable car that is truly a
time-machine back to the "good old days."
Under the hood is a Buick Straight 8; most commonly found in
Roadmasters of the same era. This car idles like a sewing machine,
and ticks along at a steady pace under load. Surprisingly powerful
for its size, driving this car is a breeze! The three-speed manual
"three on the tree" transmission is easy to operate, and the clutch
is smooth and effortless to engage. Starting off on an incline is
no trouble at all! Once you become accustomed to how a large,
pre-war car handles, this Buick is a blast to operate.
If you're looking for a largely un-restored survivor-condition
pre-war GM classic, this 1940 Buick is a great candidate for the
price! Don't miss out on this opportunity to own an uncommon piece
of automotive history.
