SIX-FIGURE SIGHTLINES
The beneficiary of a $297K nut-and-bolt restoration that was
completed by marque experts at Schwartz Performance, this awesome
Sting Ray looked right at home on the cover of Vette Magazine.
Naturally, the car's professional build is founded on a solid,
well-aligned body. That sculpted fuselage reflects rich Charcoal
2-stage that's highlighted by a glossy Stinger Stripe. And today,
this top notch drop-top rolls as a spectacular piece of iconic
American muscle that's detailed to better-than-new standards.
Given its dramatic lines, ornamentation could have easily ruined
the C2's presence. Thankfully, Chevrolet did a great job of placing
form over function and keeping brightwork to a minimum. At the
front of this Vette, quality Detroit Speed doors twirl Euro-spec
headlights above polished bumpers, a stainless-trimmed grille and
amber parking lamps. Behind those lights, a requisite cross-flag
emblem draws the eye to a stylish Stinger Hood, which plants modern
"427" scripts in front of polished frames, Detroit Speed wipers and
pristine glass that's capped by tight canvas. At the sides of that
hood, a louvered profile centers polished handles and familiar
bowtie mirrors between Schwartz-widened fenders and
Schwartz-widened quarters. And those mirrors reflect two more
polished bumpers, which frame factory taillights, polished tag
trim, a prominent Sting Ray emblem and a color-keyed fuel
filler.
SMALL BLOCK 427
Given this pro-touring Vette's aspirations of world-class
performance, throwing a chrome dress-up kit on a vintage 427 simply
wasn't an option. While old school big blocks are awesomely raw
beasts, they tend to be more machete than scalpel. That's why
Schwartz decided to dial up their friends at Chevrolet Performance
and order a brand new LS7 crate engine. Twisting 505 SAE-certified
horsepower into 470 lb./ft. of torque, the lightweight 427 rumbling
between this classic's sinuous fenders is a 21st century testament
to the bowtie division's enduring small block. Founded in GM's very
successful C6 racing program, the brutal mill utilizes a forged
crank, titanium rods and hypereutectic pistons to flat out whip
pretty much anything with four wheels. At the front of the block, a
short air tube funnels a perfect amount of oxygen between a
front-mount filter element and a GM-supplied throttle body. That
wind mixes with fuel in a composite intake, on its way to
CNC-ported cylinder heads that are finished with lightweight
titanium valves. Those valves get bumped by a GM hydraulic roller
cam that, thanks to quality AC Delco plug wires, helps create stout
11 to 1 compression. Immediately following combustion, spent gases
roar through factory manifolds. Charge comes courtesy of a polished
alternator that, along with a polished AC compressor, spins a
billet March accessory drive. A tilted Be Cool radiator fronts two
SPAL electric puller fans. Friction is kept to a minimum thanks to
dry-sump lubrication. And items like braided fluid lines, carbon
fiber fuel rail covers and a Baer master cylinder enhance the car's
serious, Satin Black engine bay.
SCHWARTZ PERFORMANCE
Park this Sting Ray on a lift and you'll find a polished and
powder-coated Schwartz Performance chassis that's finished with
RideTech coils, RideTech shocks and both front and rear sway bars.
The stout LS7 twists a stout Tremec T56 Magnum 6-speed, which spins
a mirrored differential. Turns come courtesy of power
rack-and-pinion steering. Smooth and solid stops are provided by
6-piston Baer calipers, which squeeze 14-inch drilled and slotted
rotors. A high performance fuel pump, rated to 700 horsepower,
milks a steady stream of fossils from a stainless fuel tank. An
awesome soundtrack rumbles through shielded side-pipes. And power
meets the pavement through handsome Forgeline DE3Ps, which spin
275/35ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sports in front of 295/35ZR18 Michelin
Pilot Sports.
TRADITIONAL AND TAILORED
Slip in to this roadster's monochromatic cockpit and settle on
virtually new high grade leather buckets. A dual-cowl dash hangs
clean Dakota Digital VHX telemetry between American Autowire
wiring, Vintage Air Gen IV climate control and modern Antique
Automobile audio. At the base of that dash, a leather-wrapped
console frames a leather-wrapped shifter. And a tilting column
spins a leather half-wrapped rim around a billet, Bowtie-branded
steering wheel.
