Vehicle Description
Its vibrant exterior presents a different take on a niche that's so
often about patina and surface blemishes, but the reassuringly
strong running, ready for action drivetrain this 1937 Chevrolet
Pickup Rat Rod features is very much in keeping with how its kind
got started in the first place. At a time when hot rods were being
configured more for show than go, rat rods sprang up to combine
their visual drama with real world drivability and that's what this
Chevy is all about.
The niche itself conjures up visions of caravans of
post-apocalyptic cruisers rumbling over the horizon as all
attention focuses their way and while this '37 will definitely turn
heads wherever it goes, its sunny orange and yellow is a welcome
departure from the norm. This is a bona fide show participant we
have in our midst, and its magnetic presence has served it well.
Its two-tone paint scheme has held up nicely and still has a deep,
consistent shine and the featured open engine compartment puts the
powerplant on full display. The vintage housing surrounding the
front grille is visually steeped in tradition, and it blends with
the skillfully executed modifications rat rods have come to be
known for. The headers reaching out from the engine come to an
attention getting stop before they reach the cab, the extra broad
front axle positions the nose of this street rod nice and low and
the rodent perched on the air cleaner provides a clever call out to
this singular automotive classification.
A plushly padded cloth bench seat is at the middle of the cockpit,
representing another break from tradition. Rat rods are rarely
thought of in terms of the comfort they provide, but the seating
here is well-suited to even long excursions - the excellent driving
condition of this classic makes such trips a definite option. A
pair of skeleton-emblazoned floor mats punctuate the carpet below,
combining with the matching emblem on the glove box door for
another reference to this Chevy's heritage. The authentic-looking
steering wheel has a suitably industrial vibe to it, while the dash
area beyond it hosts a collection of clear, functional gauges, and
a pair of speakers mounted in the kick panels bring audio from the
headliner-mounted AM/FM/CD player into the cabin. Raise the diamond
plated cover that sits over the bed area and you'll see that the
forward placement of the gas tank creates a nice amount of storage
space and the entire area is very solid.
The 305 cubic inch V8 holding court up front provides plenty of
dependable power to propel this vintage Chevy with enthusiasm.
Armed with a 4-barrel carburetor and an upgraded ignition system to
maximize available spark, the engine sends a deep, rumbling tone
out through its dual exhaust and is running in top form - there'll
be no worries about taking to the highway in this high impact
cruiser as soon as you bring it home. The featured open engine
compartment puts the 305 in full view, and it doesn't disappoint -
there's quite an assortment of chrome components on board to up its
visual appeal as it pairs with a smooth shifting 3-speed automatic
TH350 transmission to provide a pleasing driving experience. Front
disc brakes add fade resistant stopping power as this stare
inducing Chevy patrols the boulevard on a set of 15" wheels that
position sizable 295s in back for outstanding asphalt gripping
ability.
This 1937 Chevrolet Pickup Rat Rod is an inspired interpretation of
its segment, and its super strong running condition is a huge plus.
