For Sale: 1969 Shelby GT500 in Charlotte, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

Here at RK Motors Charlotte we have a tradition of offering you the finest muscle cars in the world. So, it's only natural that, when we found this documented, registry-listed Shelby GT500, we simply couldn't wait to post it to our website! Backing a hot Cobra Jet 428 with a smooth C6 3-speed, this polished pony is a top notch example of one of the rarest Shelby Mustangs ever produced. And better still, it's the beneficiary of a detailed, ground-up restoration that practically defines the term "clean". If you're a discerning enthusiast who wants to experience the very best of owning a high caliber muscle car, this killer GT500 deserves your full attention!

THAT'S CANDYAPPLE, NOT CANDY APPLE

Starting life at Chaffee Motors in Hawthorne, California, this Ford is the beneficiary of a detailed restoration that transformed a solid hobby horse into a battle-ready snake. A fresh coat of correct Candyapple Red 2-stage was layered over straight sheetmetal and accented with familiar gold side stripes. And today, this coupe rolls as a 'can't miss' favorite that easily puts most muscle cars to shame!

In an attempt to give their star flagship a more luxurious look for the 1969 model year, Ford designers penned a Shelby-exclusive front-clip that was very contemporary. The car's lightweight fenders and hood create a large rectangular grille opening that's detailed with an off-set Shelby emblem and 7-inch halogen headlights. Below that grille, ornate parking lamps flank a large valence that's filled with correct Lucas driving lamps. At the sides of that valence, a striped profile trades traditional Mustang ornamentation for integrated brake ducts, bright door handles and small Cobra badges. At the top of that profile, five NACA scoops feed ram air induction while color-keyed race mirrors reflects stainless-trimmed glass. Behind that glass, a correct lightweight decklid joins correct, Shelby-branded extensions to create a prominent rear spoiler. And below that deck, stylish taillights, borrowed from the Thunderbird, illuminate a showroom-fresh bumper, chrome trimmed reverse lamps and a unique aluminum exhaust collector.

POWER BY FORD

Twist this Mustang's polished ties and you'll find the storied, 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet V8 that looks as fresh as the day it rolled out of the restoration shop. Long regarded as one of the meanest MoTown mills ever created, Ford's fabled Cobra Jet utilized revised heads, heavy duty Le Mans connecting rods and a nodular iron crank to ensure Shelby-branded Mustangs remained the kings of stoplight muscle. At the top of the Ford Blue mill, functional ram air feeds a correctly painted and decaled air cleaner that's sealed onto a big Holley carburetor. At the sides of that carburetor, finned aluminum valve covers shade restored exhaust manifolds. In front of those manifolds, a correct points distributor sequences fire through High Temp cables. Below those wires, reproduction Autolite hoses circulate water through era-correct screw clamps and a tagged Ford radiator. And the factory smog system remains adding an increased level of detail and value!

RESTORATION-FRESH, TOP AND BOTTOM

Park this pony on a lift and you'll find solid, Red Oxide floors that are founded on a factory-correct chassis. The original C6 3-speed automatic transmission spins a correct 9-inch axle. That drivetrain rides a fully restored suspension that's augmented with factory power steering. Factory power front disc and rear drum brakes provide smooth stops. At the center of the car, aluminized exhaust funnels spent gases through an H-pipe crossover and rowdy Flowmaster mufflers. And power meets the pavement through polished Shelby wheels, which spin F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CONTRAST

Between the doors, a correct Black Clarion Knit vinyl interior mixes a correct combination of Hi-Back and Sport Deck seats with enough style to swerve down the red carpet. In front of those seats, a Carroll Shelby-autographed dash plants an 8,000 RPM tachometer and a 140 MPH speedometer above factory air conditioning and upfitted Sony audio. Below that dash, a factory console floats a traditional shifter and small accessory gauges on plush carpet that's protected by red-trimmed mats. Wood-trimmed door panels are a great complement to a tight headliner and deluxe seatbelts. And in front of the driver, an upfitted Rim Blow Steering Wheel laps a correct Tilt-Away column.

There are few cars that have the kind of attitude and presence of classic Shelby Mustangs. Documented, registry-listed and fully restored, this 1969 GT500 drives and sounds every bit as good as it looks. If you've always wanted to own the ultimate Ford muscle car, here's your chance!
