The 911 Targa was first introduced to the United States in 1967 as an attempt by the engineers at Porsche to provide what they felt was a safer alternative to the traditional open-air motoring experience of the standard convertible layout. The stainless steel covered roll bar provided extra crash protection while the removable roof section stowed away with ease and produced the “wind in the hair” experience that Americans in the 1960s craved so badly. This basic Targa recipe would stay in production through the 964 generation cars of the early ’90s, even after a proper 911 cabriolet was introduced during the ’80s. It wasn’t until 1996 when Porsche decided to restyle the Targa in their 993 generation cars, introducing the “greenhouse system.” This newly redesigned Targa featured a retractable glass roof which slid underneath the rear window, allowing the vehicle to maintain the same side profile as its coupe counterpart. All Targa’s were also equipped with unique 2-piece 17-inch wheels, a hallmark giveaway to the special model. The Targa would remain in production throughout the 993 generation of cars, which ended in 1998. In total, 4,619 of these special cars were produced worldwide with a scant 1151 sent to the US and Canada.

The Porsche Targa on offer here is a 1998 model year and is chassis number WP0DA299XWS385088. It is one of 334 Targas built for the final production year of the 993 series of 911’s and is finished in rare Metallic Black with a Chestnut interior. The car was initially delivered to Atlanta, Georgia where it stayed with its first owner who accrued 53,262 miles on the car during their ownership. The car was sold in 2003 through Autohaus in Lancaster, PA to its second owner in Chandler, Arizona. It remained in Arizona through 2012, appearing to have been serviced regularly and driven sparingly according to the CarFax, when it was offered for sale in 2012 with 62,422 miles on the odometer. The Targa then made its way to Florida with its third owner who put about 3,000 miles on the car before selling it to its current owner in 2015. As the car sits, it currently has 65,940 miles on the odometer. It would be best described as a well kept, driver quality example that runs and drives very nicely. It does not appear to need anything at the current time, and between the rarity of the Targa and the fantastic color combination, it would make an excellent addition to any garage or Porsche collection.
