The first generation of the Chevrolet Chevelle (1964-1967) created
several iconic American muscle cars. Almost every year of the first
generation is sought after, and the second generation Chevelle is
not any different! 1968 marked the beginning of the second-gen
Chevelle and is an interesting year because it incorporates styling
elements present both in the earlier and later models. The
taillights are reminiscent of 1966, while the fastback styling
looks like 1970!
This particular 1968 Chevelle SS396 Convertible is a real deal 138
VIN SS! The exterior received a full repaint in the Matador Red
color. The body is straight and the paint quality is superb.
Originally, this car was optioned as paint code "R2" which denotes
Matador Red with a black convertible top. This car has recently
received a new convertible top with a glass rear window and it sure
looks great! Additionally, when it was restored a cloth convertible
top was chosen over a vinyl convertible top as it not only looks
nicer but is the superior material choice.
Inside the engine bay, you'll find a big block, but its no 396!
That's right, its a 454 bored out with a mild cam. It's a fresh
motor with less than 100 miles on it since it was built. The 454 is
hooked up to a heavy duty TH400 automatic transmission to optimize
cruising. The engine bay is clean and the engine has plenty of
torque for when you want to roast the rear tires off a muscle car.
All that power is transferred to the ground thanks to a beefy
12-bolt rear end. Stopping power comes courtesy of power front disc
brakes. Additionally, the power steering is a nice bonus for this
muscle car. The underside is extremely solid and a quick look on
the lift and you'll see how its been left un-tampered with and is
free of damage.
The inside is just as beautiful as the outside! Almost every piece
is new or refinished, and a RetroSound radio looks right at home in
the dash. Originally equipped with A/C from the factory, during the
restoration a Vintage Air system was installed not only to retain
air conditioning, but to make it more functional and reliable. The
black bucket seat interior is the perfect match to the red and
black exterior giving this Chevelle the essential muscle car
look.
If you're looking for a real, true, 1968 Chevelle SS Convertible
with a 454, this is the car for you. This would be an excellent
vehicle to cruise around in on a regular basis or to take to car
shows. Looking to take the whole family? The backseat has plenty of
space for kids. This bright red drop top won't last long!
