First generation Blazers may have been built in a short run, from
1969-1972, but they have become perhaps the most classic Blazer of
all! With a following comparable to that of the original Ford
Bronco, the Blazer is a topless SUV essential. Before going into
the details, you're probably wondering why this Jimmy is being
referred to as a Blazer! That's because this truck is sort of both.
The front sheet metal and rear tailgate are Jimmy components, but
the body and VIN are Blazer. The GMC sheet metal gives it a unique
look, and this 2WD beauty is a street machine ready to burn some
rubber and turn some heads!
Originally a 350 V8, 4-speed manual, 3.73 rear gear truck when new,
this Blazer was already set up to be the perfect start to a
high-powered custom build. The exterior is finished in a gorgeous
light blue, which appears to be GM's "Arctic Blue." The blue with
white hard top combination is absolutely killer, and provides a
classic look without detracting from the mean stance. The had top
is the double-wall version, which could be considered more
desirable due to increased rigidity and sound deadening properties.
The bed side markers have been removed and shaved, as well as the
gas tank filler which has been relocated to the bed interior. This
provides a cleaner exterior look, without noticeably altering the
original look. Additionally, the tailgate handle has also been
shaved and relocated to the inside of the tailgate to complete the
shaved look. Lastly, a custom half-top was made from a 1967 C10
single cab roof. This allows you to configure the Blazer as a
regular pickup, should you so desire, by simply changing the
top.
The interior has some custom touches, but unless you're a
Blazer/Jimmy expert, you may not initially notice them. The most
desirable interior upgrade is the addition of a "buddy bucket seat"
from a 1967 C10. This setup allows driver and passenger to retain
bucket seats, while adding a middle seat the fold into an arm rest,
similar to a bench seat setup. While this option was never
available for Blazers or Jimmys, it is an excellent upgrade. The
interior has been finished in a blue similar to the exterior color,
which is a nice touch and gives the truck a wonderful feeling of
continuity. Aside from an add-on tachometer, the interior retains a
largely original feel.
The drivetrain is where this Blazer really shines! Under the hood
is a 468 cubic inch Chevrolet big block V8 with 10.7:1 compression.
Upgrades include JE forged pistons, Edlebrock Performer RPM
Aluminum Heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum intake manifold,
Howards Roller Cam and Roller Rockers, Comp Cams Valve Springs, ARP
fasteners, Fel-Pro gaskets, as well as a distributor, Blaster SS
coil, 6A ignition control, and plug wires all from MSD. Lastly, the
icing on the cake that is this engine is the F.A.S.T EZ EFI
self-tuning fuel injection system and a set of Sanderson headers.
That's right, this puppy is fuel injected! It fires right up every
time; no pumping the pedal to prime the carburetor. Hooked up to
the 468 engine is a New Process A833 4-speed transmission (a
3-speed with an overdrive gear). Other transmission-related
upgrades include a Ram PowerGrip clutch, Ram billet steel flywheel,
and a Denny's aluminum driveshaft. The rear end is a Ford 9" with
3.50 rear gears, which is coveted combination amongst hotrodders
and custom builders everywhere. Additionally, a Yukon Dura Grip
positraction unit has been installed in the rear. With four-wheel
disc brakes, not only does this Blazer move like a bat out of hell,
it also stops on a dime! But wait, the list goes on! There are
almost too many upgrades to list, but we're going to anyway.
Additional upgrades include:
• Early Classic Drop Spindles • Early Classic Super Track Bar •
Early Classic Shock Relocator Kit • Early Classic Front Sway Bar •
Tubular Upper Control Arms • Porterbuilt Trailing Arm X-member • US
Mags Rambler wheels • Continental Extreme Contact tires • Griffin
Aluminum Radiator • Flex-A-Lite electric fans • Jackrabbit
Retractable Tonneau cover (for use with half cab) • Flowmaster 50
Series Mufflers • Porterbuilt Hood Hinges • In-tank electric fuel
pump • Vintage Cal Customs Valve covers This Blazer is one serious
build! It was stripped to bare metal before being painted, all of
the weatherstripping has been replaced, and you would have an
extremely hard time finding an item on this truck that hasn't been
either replaced or refinished. The only exception is the glovebox
door inside, which has been left untouched to show the original
color plus the original options list. If you're looking for an
absolute show-stopped of unbelievable quality, this Jimmy-cloned
Blazer may just be your final stop.
