1996 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
Instead of mixing the thoroughbred Cobra V8 among lesser engines at
the Romeo, Michigan manufacturing plant, Ford had chosen to
assemble the DOHC power plant off-line using a dozen two-member
teams. Each team will build one engine start to finish and sign off
their creation before sending it on its way. This personalized
touch also happens to be a longstanding tradition at Aston Martin,
the most exotic nameplate owned by the Ford Motor Company. Now,
with true craftsmanship and 305 horsepower snorting under the
muscle-Mustang's hood, America's original pony car enjoys
world-class bragging rights.
For consignment an everyday looking Mustang from 1996, however with
improvements under the hood, it is now a thoroughbred. Our
consigner states there are over $10,000 worth of improvements put
in for him by a Ford Master tech, so we know it runs well!
Exterior
Starting out life from the factory as Laser Red, we now see a
respray of Yellow. Yellow everywhere as this car and save for the
badging, there is not one lick of chrome anywhere. Some scrapes and
scratches are noted on the rocker areas, as well as the bumpers. A
rear spoiler is seen, and correct SVT and Cobra Badges have been
adhered to the bodywork. Custom American Racing Wheels gleam on all
4 corners and are staggered.
Interior
Sweet Corbeau Racing style seats in cloth stitched inserts and
vinyl bolsters and plenty of body-hugging side panels keep you
snugly in the seats when you are doing doughnuts in the parking
lot. The iconic Mustang twin eyebrow dash in deep black and owning
a peppering of white-faced gauges inserted within creates a
stealthy look for the interior. We note this car is now a rear seat
delete with simple carpeted storage in the back of the buckets.
Ford racing gauges are aerodynamically imbedded into the A pillar
so you can keep a close watch on the essentials. Embroidered in
gray, Cobra Logo floor mats with black backgrounds cover nicely
preserved black carpet.
Drivetrain
SVT Mustang Cobras are for the first time equipped with Ford's
4.6-liter modular V8 engine. The Cobra's 4.6-liter dual overhead
cam (DOHC) aluminum V8 produces 305 horsepower. However, with an
added Kenne Bell Supercharger Kit, a JLT Cold Air Intake, upgraded
runners, BBK Chrome Headers, MSD coil and Ford 9mm racing style
wires, the horsepower has been increased. A new Stage 2 clutch,
pressure plate, and flywheel prepare the 5-speed manual
transmission to handle the extra power that will inevitably come
its way.
Undercarriage
Rust free, very clean, we note a complete Maximum Motor Sports Max
Grip Kit for the front and rear suspension. A new 3.73 Posi rear,
and 3 row aluminum radiator to keep it cool is there. Drilled and
slotted rotors and Powerstop pads will bring you to s halt quickly.
A custom H Pipe exhaust starts from the headers and heads
rearward.
Lightened weight, plenty of performance and handling upgrades, and
a change to Yellow, and we have our Thoroughbread. Not your average
Cobra SVT, but now a Screaming Yellow Zonker. See ya!
