Vehicle Description
1980 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
Chevy boosted the compression ratio, used a four-barrel Rochester
carb and dual-plane aluminum intake manifold to develop the
performance the L82 in 1975. It featured a 9-to-1 compression ratio
to generate 205 horsepower. Output increased to 210 horsepower and
255 foot-pounds of torque in 1976. Two years later the L82 saw its
output increase again to 220 horsepower. In 1979, Chevy gave the
L82 larger valves, a 10.2-to-1 compression ratio and new cam to
push horsepower to 225, and then 230 horsepower in 1980. The L82
had larger heads and valves, four-bolt mains, forged steel crank,
different pistons and aluminum intake. Although the cam is stronger
in the L82, it's physically identical to the L48. The L82 had
2.02-inch valves and the L48 measures 1.94 inches. The L48
possessed a cast crank, two-bolt mains and a cast-iron intake
manifold.
Classic Auto Mall is proud to present 1980 L82 Version Corvette.
Turning the spotlight on we are met with a beautifully designed and
bathed in Dark Brown body, and snazzy leather interior. 80,315
miles clocked on her, and she's holding up very well....
Exterior
From the swooping front long racing styled hood, to the simple 4
round lighted rear with just a touch of spoiler, this car is Dark
Brown (chocolate if you will) all day. Showing some chips,
scratches and wear in the form of small bubbling of the clear
coating, it is not perfect, but still beautifully designed. Hidden
headlights up front give it an aerodynamic feel, and for some sun,
you can pop off the glass panels of the roof. A long and curved
greenhouse rear glass covers a large storage area in the rear. 4
knockoff style wheels adorn the corners.
Interior
Tan leather, gold carpet, and enough instrumentation to keep you
occupied for a significant amount of time, makes up the pure 1980's
style interior. All looking good in here with little wear, and some
minor staining of the carpet. The actuation of the windows is under
question, as well as the functionality of the tachometer stuck at
1000 RPM. Some aftermarket electronics in the form of a radio have
been installed in place of the factory originals.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood forward, and we have full access to the original
unrestored engine bay. This houses an L82 350ci V8 that is verified
as numbers matching so its original. A single 4-barrel carburetor
sits atop of this mill, and a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission
is bolted on back. This throws power back to a Dana 44 rear setup
and smokes the tires at will.
Undercarriage
Typical wear, patina, and dirt are showing underneath, and for 1980
is typical. Invasive rust is noted up front under the radiator
support, and surface rust is on the frame in the front of the car.
The back of this car shows no rust, surface or otherwise.
1980 was not a banner year for the Corvette as it was getting
pounded with emissions regulations, and even had to come up with a
different engine for California. Design was definitely there
though, and this car shows it. Not a perfect example, but priced
right, and you will be seated in a Corvette, which it doesn't get
any better than that!
