Vehicle Description
In addition to serving as a foundation for countless aftermarket
projects over the years, the noble Falcon was also a precursor to
the Mustang and almost singlehandedly stemmed the tide of American
auto buyers flocking to imports to satisfy their demand for
smaller, more dependable cars. Looking good and running great, this
1965 Ford Falcon Futura is a fine representative of the model,
carrying just a couple of subtle but effective upgrades to raise
the bar on the driving and aesthetic experience it offers.
Its relatively compact -but by no means cramped - form has been
re-energized in a magnetic shade of red. Take a closer look and
you'll no doubt appreciate the consistently tight body alignment on
display here - the gaps surrounding the doors, hood and deck lid
are nice and even and the panels blend together seamlessly. The
vibrant paint, ornamented by contrasting black trim running the
lengths of the sides, combines with the precise exterior fitment to
make for a classic that would be a worthy entrant on the local car
show circuit. As far as stance is concerned, this Falcon strikes a
nice balance - showing just a subtle incline to add a touch of
aftermarket attention without adversely affecting wheel clearance
or overall visual balance. From the front grille back to the rear
tail pipes, the chrome on display is pretty clean - a little
polishing here and there will take it to an even higher level.
The interior has a thoroughly authentic appearance and has been
freshened up with bench seating wrapped with red vinyl whose tuck
and roll surface ties in perfectly with the door panels and quarter
trim to each side. Below, the carpet is well-fitted and very clean.
Take your place behind the factory-style steering wheel that sits
on its factory-issue column and you'll notice just how comfortable
the seating is - you'll have no issues embarking on lengthy trips
in this cockpit. Farther forward on the dash, the fresh-looking
instrument panel houses a collection of fully functional stock
gauges that are still easily readable through their clear lenses.
The AM radio at the center adds to the air of authenticity in this
interior but will need a little work to get back up and running.
Raise the deck lid in back and you'll find a full-size spare inside
- from this vantage point you can see that the floor and inner
fenders are solid.
At the center of an engine bay deck that's decked out with glossy
black paint is a 289 cubic inch V8 whose class is known for its
anvil like durability - even more than 50 years after the first of
these small blocks went into service, many are still on the road
today. The 289 is outfitted with a pair of aftermarket heads topped
with chrome Edelbrock valve covers, with an Edelbrock intake
manifold and upgraded 4-barrel carb also on top to increase its
output. A smooth shifting 3-speed automatic transmission sits just
behind the engine, so this is a solid running drivetrain that makes
for a very enjoyable driving experience in its present state and
would also be a stable base for any power add-ons you might wish to
bolt on in the future. Front disc brakes help bring the set of
eye-catching 14" Baby Moon chrome wheels wearing beefy tires that
still showing plenty of tread to fade resistant stops.
