Vehicle Description
Closing out that pivotal first generation of Chevy's true American
sports car, this 1962 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible benefited from
all the aesthetic and mechanical upgrades that came along over the
years since the model first debuted. It's loyally served just one
owner over the past 30 plus years and has been both thoroughly
restored and attentively maintained - you'd be hard pressed to find
a more impressive representative of its generation.
Not surprisingly, considering the considerable cool Corvettes were
already equipped with upon hitting the showrooms, this specimen
remains in consistently factory configuration. Its exterior wears a
shade that's within a stone's throw of the Roman Red on the 1962
color chart and is looking strong, with its shine fully intact and
no distracting blemishes in sight. Corvettes from this era wore an
appealing collection of exterior chrome, and all of it on this one
- from the curved grille and front bumper all the way back - is in
consistently nice shape, yet another sign that the car has been
securely sheltered. Spin around to the back and you'll notice the
pair of double taillights, a feature that was added just the year
before this Chevy rolled out. They became a defining styling cue
for the model and still grace its descendants to this day. Should
the weather ever fail to cooperate with your open-air motoring
intentions, there's a black vinyl convertible top included that's
well fitted and features a clear plastic window for good
visibility.
The black vinyl interior illustrates that Chevy had already hit its
stride as far as equipping its prized model with inspired driving
environments. Its been refurbished to high standards while holding
onto its original appearance and, with features like its extensive,
aeronautically inspired array of instrumentation and chrome
accenting surrounding its signature sizable analog clock, competing
auto makers had to have considered its aesthetic supremacy a
foregone conclusion as they scrambled to catch up. The low-backed
buckets, as well as the door panels they're bracketed by, look
fresh - the hardware on those panels includes switches to operate
the power windows, a feature that continues to function just as
intended. In back, the trunk area is surprisingly spacious and in
very clean condition.
The engine compartment has been well maintained, like everything
else on this classic. At its center is a period correct 327 cubic
inch V8. This small block would go on to be Chevy's preeminent
small block for quite some time and it made its debut the very year
this '62 first rolled out. The upgraded 4-barrel carb on top
represents the only deviation from stock inside the compartment,
and provides just a little extra muscle that's transferred to the
asphalt via the smooth-shifting 4-speed manual transmission sitting
just behind the motor. This is a rock-solid drivetrain- the 327
fires right up and runs strong and the clutch action is
impressively smooth and precise for a car of this era. Power
steering teams with the low, road hugging profile of this 'Vette to
make for an exhilarating vintage driving experience, while power
brakes that feature discs up front bring this to a stop in a hurry
when needed. A set of 15" wire wheels with ultra-sharp red Chevy
branded centers that are wrapped with Goodyear Eagle GTII tires add
just the right finishing touch. Below, the undercarriage exceeds
all expectations - it's in great shape and well positioned for
plenty more miles of driving enjoyment.
First generation Corvettes aren't easy to come by, and this 1962
