"The Latest Generation
The Ferrari 488 GTB was introduced in 2015 for the 2016 model year.
This new Italian mid-engine coupe comes powered by a 3.9-liter
twin-turbo V-8 that delivers 660 hp at 8,000 rpm, and up to 560
lb-ft of torque at just 3,000 rpm with the help of low-inertia,
low-friction turbochargers. Although this supercar is a successor
to the 458, Ferrari says 85 percent of the 488 is brand new. The
roof, greenhouse, front subframe, and suspension are carried over
from the outgoing 458. A new benchmark has been set when it comes
to chassis dynamics thanks to the 488's integration of the E-Diff
and F1-Trac systems with its second-generation side slip control
system (SSC2). Additionally, the SSC2 now also controls the damping
rates for the MagneRide shocks, adjusting their rates in response
to the car's slip angle and helping to dial out excessive
understeer or oversteer. The GTB can hit 60 mph in a
Ferrari-claimed 3 seconds flat and has a top speed of 205 mph. "But
what's most impressive is the utter composure of the chassis-on
twisting, turning, bumpy back roads the 488 rides beautifully and
tracks true; on the track it's the most confidence-inspiring
mid-engine supercar you'll ever drive," we said in a First Test
review.
The Ferrari 488 Spider does something that many spider variants
can't: match the coupe variant's performance numbers. Ferrari
claims that the 110-pound heavier Spider can hit 60 mph in the same
amount of time (3.0 seconds) as the 488 GTB. The Spider top drops
down in 14 seconds and can be opened or closed at speeds up to 28
mph. "Unlike other convertibles that can't hang with their hardtop
brothers, the 488 Spider matches the 488 GTB in nearly every way.
The only difference is who owns it," we said in a First Test
review. The racing versions of the 488 GTB are the 488 GTE and 488
GT3; both use the same 3.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 from the GTB.
