The inaugural issue of MOTOR TREND named Cadillac the Car of the Year in 1949. Ford and Oldsmobile were also considered, but Cadillac had more horsepower and weighed less.
In 1946-48 Cadillac updated its pre-WWII models with the elegance befitting a luxury marque. In 1948, Cadillac introduced its first convertible and the first tail fins that would continue to distinguish this make for years to come.
Previous to 1949, the 346-cubic inch flathead V-8 engine was heavy and not extremely efficient. In 1949, Cadillac engineers unveiled a new overhead-valve V-8 engine. This new 331 cubic inch engine was lighter, had more horsepower and was more fuel efficient. With a smaller, more compact engine the hood of the 1949 Cadillac was more streamlined. This Convertible has a 126-inch wheelbase and automatic transmission.
This was one of the first cars to have power windows, a longer hood and the grille has a bolder line with just one horizontal bar. The parking lights wrap around the fenders and this model has two back-up lights and no chrome between the taillights and the bumper. The interior dash has a newly designed and more conventional horizontal speedometer instead of the large hump over the dash panel.
This Top of the Line Cadillac has benefited from a full frame off restoration several years ago. It has been expertly maintained although driven several thousand miles.
