Vehicle Description
1929 Ford Woodie Station Wagon
There's something timeless about early Woodie wagons, perhaps
because they represent a time when craftsmen, not robots, built
cars. Their upkeep requires a bit more commitment (and a bit more
elbow grease) than with steel-bodied cars, giving owners more
reason to spend time in the garage. When production of the Model A
ended in March of 1932, there were 1,507,132 of the 1929 Ford Model
A's of which only 4,954 Model A Station Wagons were
manufactured.
For consignment a Woodie Station Wagon offered and manufactured by
Ford. This 8-passenger wagon has been restored to a beautiful shine
and is in excellent condition. With a bulletproof interior, it
could be used in literally any type of weather. There are no side
panels with this version of the wagon. The current owner and
consigner, had it for over 10 years. It was purchased from family
friend who owned itsince the '60s. This car was restored back in
the day by Slifer Motor Works on the Main Line and is maintained by
them still today.
Exterior
A straight steel hood and cowling in Dark Tan emulating the color
of chocolate milk is flanked by steel curved fenders on front and
rear, with a running board connecting them. These are covered in
Black with a rubber covered running board. Steel spoked wheels in
Black, are wrapped with 3' tires with wide white sidewalls. 2
additional spares tuck neatly into each front fender, and rest on
the running boards. A black vinyl covered sunshade covers the top
of a flip out windscreen to allow for air circulation. The same
vinyl covers the expansive top. The passenger compartment is made
up of beautifully restored paneled Birch wood, which shines like
new. It has mahogany lath furring strips in its ceiling, then the
vinyl above. All doors operate flawlessly.
Interior
Simple and utilitarian would be the buzz words, as these vehicles
were used mostly by expensive resorts and inns of the day, and some
early airports to shuttle quantities of people on short trips. A
vinyl covered bench seat stretches across the interior on the front
and rear, and 2 buckets make up the middle row to allow access to
the rear bench, since our version is a 4-door wagon, with a
tailgate. No side panels are seen so you will be in the elements
per se with this wagon. A metal dash in matching" chocolate
milk"(dark tan) with a chromed "mask style" instrument cluster in
the center is fronted by an excellent condition original steering
wheel. A non-synchronized transmission requires a double clutch,
when rowing with the long shift lever.
Drivetrain
The engine of this Model A is a water-cooled L-head 4-cylinder with
a displacement of 201ci. This engine provided 40hp and top speed
was around 65 mph. The transmission is a conventional 3-speed
sliding gear manual unsynchronized unit with a single speed
reverse.
Undercarriage
A nice amalgamation of warm wood and cold steel all work together
to create a solid and structurally sound undercarriage. This Model
A also features 4-wheel mechanical drum brakes. This car was the
first model to use the standard set of driver controls (with
conventional clutch and brake pedals, throttle and gearshift),
although there is a throttle lever and a timing advance on the
wheel that are working, and the first car produced to have safety
glass in the windshield.
My test drive was like going back in time picturing myself in the
Adirondacks shuttling tourists to different hotels, inns, and
restaurants. This wagon is a true driver, and looking out over the
long hood, or rearward through the minute rear view mirror, was a
real treat to drive. Quite the experience, and all within the
confines of beautiful warm wood-ie!
