Vehicle Description
1966 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible
In celebration of their 50th year of production, Chevrolet
introduced the Impala. Designs were changing, moving away from
traditional tail fins being replaced by deep sculpted rear panels,
dual headlamps, larger "greenhouse" passenger compartments, and
upgrades in suspension and engine options. Interior finishes such
as color keyed door panels, and brushed aluminum began at this time
as well. Through generations 1 to 3, styling got sleeker, passenger
compartments lower, and emphasis was on a look of a car in motion,
when it was sitting still.
Flashy muscle cars are fun, and polished customs are nice, but for
some folks, there's nothing better than a well-done cruiser. No
gimmicks, no frills and no drama; just sun and fun - LOTS of fun.
This exceptionally clean Impala is a classy stunner that has been
in the capable hands of 1 owner for all these years. Bought by her
father as a gift to her, our consigner dated, got married, raised a
family, and all life has to bring, all the while owning this car
from its inception. It is the beneficiary of a frame-off
restoration, and a reminder of many memories.
Exterior
Rid of any rust that might have been on this car, it is now long
gone, and replaced by straight steel, with great consistent gaps,
then a fine coating of Chrysler Black Cherry with a glass-like
finish is seen all over this car. A nicely contrasting beige
convertible top is in fine working condition. Wonderful script
style badging is seen on the front quarters, and on all 4 corners
are the correct and essential SS wheel covers. Dual exhaust
protrude from the rear of this car, and produce a wonderful sound
when the accelerator is pressed in the downward direction.
Interior
Two tone Fawn Beige in bucket form, and a rear bench in the same,
make up the newly restored original interior. Straight and true GM
dash and instrumentation and plentiful use of ribbed aluminum makes
up the center console, and it shows a storage glovebox, and the
automatic shifter, and another for storage area. Interestingly the
interior of the top is dark brown. All this sits behind a new
windshield and weatherstripping.
Drivetrain
Reworking the original 283ci V8 now bored over .30, and a rebuilt
Powerglide 2-speed transmission with a rebuilt torque converter,
new clutch, we now have a great working couple, not unlike the
owners.
Undercarriage
Up on the lift, we gaze upon miles of clean sprayed steel, with
virtually no rust. There has been an upgrade to power brakes, a
3-core radiator, electronic ignition, new brake and gas lines, and
some new suspension parts for that ultra-smooth big car Chevrolet
ride.
You can see the story unfold in a folder full of receipts, a book
full of photos, and life full of this Chevy SS for consignment.
Turn the key and have your years of enjoyment...why not?
