Vehicle Description
This 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is highly original inside and
out. But under the hood you have a screaming 428 V8 upgrade that
really lets this speedy-looking T/A live up to the car you always
wanted it to be.
This generation Firebird really gave off a southwestern hero vibe,
and this one really shows it off best. The Mayan Red has the rich
color of a desert sunset, and the phoenix-style hood bird with
flares coming off its wings only adds to the legend. What's
particularly impressive on this example is how original it has
remained all these decades later (even the mileage is suspected -
but unconfirmed - to be original.) There has been enjoyment over
the years, but the way this still shines nicely and the
straightness of the panels tells you this coupe has been treated
with reverence. And these T/As really did command respect. The wide
ground effects in front of the wheel wells, fender vents,
integrated rear spoiler, and shaker hood all gives this a real
presence on the streets. And those snowflake alloys are legends all
on their own.
The black interior looks great against the exterior red. And just
like the outside, the inside is suspected to be highly original.
The carpeting, door panels, and headliner have a nice dark
presentation. And the high-back bucket seats are finished in a
plush velour for comfort. Plus, you have great original options
like power windows and the AM/FM stereo. This classic is a true
driver's machine, and that's why it comes with features like the
armrest center console, floor shifter, and grippy sports steering
wheel specific to the Trans Ams. And we all love the look of the
full gauge package set in the bright machine-turned panel.
Under the hood is where this one varies from stock, and it's also
what you're going to love the most. The V8 displaces 428
cubic-inches. That's a legendary size in Pontiac circles and larger
than what was available in '78. It came from Leader Automotive that
was known for big power swaps. This V8 has the right performance
pieces like a four-barrel carburetor, aluminum intakes, and long
tube headers feeding a Pypes dual exhaust. All this power is sent
through a stout TH400 three-speed automatic transmission on its way
to a Positraction rear end. This is an ultra-desirable WS6 car, and
so it was known to be one of the best handling American cars of its
time. That means power steering, sway bars front & rear, and front
disc brakes.
The sale comes complete with the factory buildsheet, build
receipts, and Pontiac Historic Services (PHS) documentation. So if
you want a highly original car with a serious performance upgrade,
