Company in Westminster MD Unlike the unmistakable Yenko versions
there was little to distinguish this 1969 COPO Chevelle from a
garden-variety Malibu with a few subtle exceptions. Another fine
offering from the Ken Lingenfelter Collection this was in fact a
stealth machine right from the beginning when a young William
Shimkus purchased it new from Westminster Motor Company in
Westminster Maryland on August 13 1969. William's parents it seems
had cosigned the loan he had taken for the car and were not
informed by the dealership that it was not a 396 as they were led
to believe. As documented by COPO Connection it was in fact ordered
with the COPO 9562 High Performance 427 package. Like the COPO
Camaros the package used the L72 cast-iron big-block with 4-bolt
main bearing caps forged-steel crank and rods forged aluminum
pistons 11.0:1 compression a solid-lifter cam aluminum intake and
800 CFM Holley 4-barrel. The COPO Chevelle also used the special
reinforced 4.10:1 12-bolt Positraction rear end and could be
ordered with either a 400 Turbo automatic an M22 "Rock Crusher"
4-speed or as in this case the Muncie M21 close-ratio unit. F41
heavy-duty suspension and power front disc brakes were also
required. While no COPO Chevelles were built as SS versions some
did include some of that model's features usually the blacked-out
front grillewith a blue Bowtie emblem in place of the SS badgeand
tail panel. This car also received the SS hood with its twin power
bulges 3-piece Magnum 500 wheels with SS center caps and Goodyear
Wide Tread F70-14 tires bright wheel-arch trim and contrasting
white body-side stripes that perfectly tie together the
special-order red paint a Parchment vinyl roof and a rare
Parchment-on-black Strato bucket-seat interior. Also on the menu
were Soft Ray-tinted glass U11 tachometer and gauge cluster with
gasoline temperature oil pressure and battery gauges U35 center
dash clock and radio delete. Even among COPO Chevelles this is a
unique automobile so it is fitting that noted COPO specialist Dave
Tinnell performed its restoration. That was in 1998 after which the
completed car made its public debut at that year's Chevelle
Nationals. The car has long been in the care of several prominent
members of the COPO and Supercar community including Randy Miller
Mick Price Bryan Milliorn and most recently Ken Lingenfelter. Visit
