For Sale: 1936 Ford 5-Window Coupe in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1936 Ford 5 Window

There's something special about the 1936 Ford 5-Window coupe. The styling combines the traditional upright grille with a streamlined body to create one of the best-looking cars of the period. Many of these iconic coupes have been turned into hot rod over the years, but this one is more about an honest 1930s experience. The gently rounded fenders with their peaked crease through the middle, the nicely detailed hood vents, and stylish rear with rumble seat- it all feels like this has all been transported intact from 1936.

This car has had a couple of personalities, and a couple of trips across the country but all fun between a couple of friends. In the 1970's it was hot rodded by 2 of the buddies both lifer army guys from Colorado. The car eventually ended up in Washington State where another buddy then (1990's) brought it back to Delaware where it was used as a Hot Rod until 2009, when the hot rodding days were done, and it underwent a frame off restoration to become the car you see today.

Exterior
With the parts from various cars to make it complete all steel was sandblasted and then filled in where needed, then coated with satin finish epoxy primer. It received all new glass, running board covers, top insert, door insulation, window seals, weather stripping, insulation and soundproofing. The front axle has been dropped and drilled, and Posies springs added. The front of the car has the beautiful dipped bumper which frames a vertical radiator, and a shaved hood (Ford logo oval only). Flanking the grille are 41 Ford truck headlights. 50 Mercury wheels and moon hubcaps are wrapped by period correct wide whites.

Interior
A nearly perfect red bakelite banjo style steering wheel with the Iconic V8 logo in the center, fronts a beautifully restored dash with a machined gold oval that houses Stewart Warner winged gauges. 2 toned white and yellow flourish pin striping abounds highlighting the red metal, and also adorning a Mighty wipers and heater box. A two toned maroon bolstered bench seat with white vertical pleated inserts stretches across the compartment from door to door. Door panels carry the same color motif and have fully functioning window cranks and door handles. The trunk of this car flows right into the rear passenger compartment and allows for plenty of storage without the rumble seat installed. A tilt of the front windshield brings fresh air throughout the cabin, and you could ask yourself who needs A/C?

Drivetrain
A machine worked Mercury 280ci Flathead V8 with a 4" crank .40 over pistons, Predator 3/4 cam, adjustable lifters, Edlbrock heads, Thickson PM7 Intake, 94 Carbs, Bubba's Chevy distributor, Speedway water pumps, a re-cored radiator to keep everything cool, and 12V generator...sheesh! Attached behind is a T5 5-speed manual transmission.

Undercarriage
The original style X frame with upgraded suspensions mentioned earlier, as well as an 11" clutch, and a 3.78 Banjo rear. '58 Buick finned aluminum brakes are seen in the front and well adjusted drums on the rear. This car has great hooks to bring you back to reality when you get carried away with the Flathead!

Nearly every car that arrives in Classic Auto Mall I personally try to drive. It takes only a few minutes to see if it is what it says it is, and it is an interesting aspect of my job. Very few cars I'm so impressed with I drive twice. Chalk this up to one of the very few, as I'm enamored with this car...in many ways. It has a very smooth ride, responsive turning, smooth transmission, nice power, and it comes to a halt quickly. The builder/consigner did a great job, and someone will have the pleasure to drive it many many times, and they will enjoy every minute of it in its current sedan iteration. Let's welcome it to the East Coast!
