For Sale: 1950 MG TD in Kent, Connecticut

Vehicle Description

1950 MG TD

It is numbers matching and was produced in May of 1950, one of the first 1700 cars produced out of a 30,000 car run, up until the end of 1953. There were roughly 4700 total MG TD's produced for 1950 and 2800 made it here to the USA.

This is a 2 owner car that has roughly 500 miles on the rebuild, the paint and interior. The odometer shows 15841 miles but it is believed to have 115,841 miles.

It is believed that the first owner purchased this car when he was starting college.

He owned it and drove it all of his life and roughly 10+ years ago started a restoration on the car. He had the engine fully rebuilt, suspension work done (bushings, etc.), the car painted but then started running into some health issues and the restoration stalled. He decided to put it out on the lawn For Sale.

Just across town, the current owner and his wife were discussing her 40th wedding anniversary present. She mentioned that she would really like an older British/British style roadster. He started looking. One day, a few weeks later, he gets a call from his wife... I found it! I found it!

He drove over, checked out the car and bought it on the spot, needing a bit of finishing.

That was 8 years ago.

After driving it a couple of times, she was a little concerned with the brakes (it is 4 wheel drum and they aren't all that big), he was a bit more concerned and turned around and bought her a new Miata instead. He has driven the MG sparingly over the last 8 years, mostly in town with a couple of jaunts up to Lime Rock Park's Historic Festival (he's only 20 mins away), however, every year the car gets winterized and in the spring he has the oil changed and keeps the car on a trickle charger.

In the 8 years of their ownership, he purchased a new bonnet and had it painted, he added the carpet kit, Vredstein tires, side mirrors, windwings, the leather bonnet belt and door sill plates. The twin air cleaners replaced the single air cleaner for better breathing when the engine was rebuilt.  The twin Lucas fog lamps and radiator thermometer were factory accessories.

Reportedly, when getting the car painted, the original owner saw a set of scalloped/cut fenders that apparently local racing legend Skip Barber had ordered up for one of his cars and then decided not to go that route. The original owner liked them and had them added to the car.

The car has a couple of minor needs still: the rear chrome bumper, the dash board is clean but could be refinished to look quite a bit better, the head bolts need to be retorqued and the master cylinder has a leaky seal (the head bolts and master cylinder will be handled before the sale takes place). There are only a couple of minor appearance issues, one scrape on the bonnet where the belt rubber popped off and rubbed the side panel (can't be seen when the belt is in place), the grill surround, lights and door handles have some polishing marks and small pits that very probably could be polished out correctly.

The car is painted underneath and overall is in beautiful condition. The 1250cc XPAG 4 cylinder starts and runs on the first turn and the car drives beautifully, shifting easily through all four gears. When it was rebuilt the first owner added a spin on oil filter for ease of oil changes.

This car, in it's black over Oxblood red leather interior, really turns heads when he brings her into town and she will for you too!
