Vehicle Description
The Porsche 911 turns 55 this year, and regardless of whether
you're an air-cooled guy or a liquid-cooled fan, you have to admit
that no other vehicle in history has been so single-mindedly
awesome for so long. This 2011 911 Carrera 4s Cabriolet is a
fantastic way to celebrate, offering a lengthy list of options (you
know how expensive those can be), classic 911 styling, and
performance that's unmatched by virtually anything else on the
street. Oh, and you can drive it to work every day, because the 911
is also the world's most reliable supercar.
With an original MSRP of over $135,000, the Carrera 4S Cabriolet is
definitely not an inexpensive car, but it's also one of those rare
cases where you get exactly what you pay for. Build quality is
every bit as good as the best from Mercedes-Benz or even
Rolls-Royce, with typical German attention to precision. Cloaking
it in elegant Carrara White helps it keep a low profile (do you
really want to be the middle-aged guy in a bright yellow 911) and
looks fast just sitting still. If you look very close, you might be
able to find a couple minor flaws, but the paint is so smooth, so
crystal clear, and so beautifully applied that I think you'll
probably get distracted before you find it. Traditional round
headlights, a smooth tail with retractable spoiler, and LED
taillights help make it instantly identifiable from a quarter-mile
away, perhaps the last production car to be able to make that
claim. Along with the AWD option, the "4" in "4S" also
automatically means that the rear fenders are wider, just like they
would be in a Turbo model, an added performance upgrade that will
attract even more attention. The removable hard top provides shade
and privacy when needed, but if this 911 were mine, I'd drop that
blue power top and go searching for sunshine every time I had her
out.
The interior is, of course, a pure driver's environment loaded with
almost every option available in 2011. You can argue that the 911
has gotten soft in its old age, but you'd be wrong. The Sea Blue
leather buckets grab you firmly but not uncomfortably, the pedals
are right where they belong for heel-and-toe maneuvering, and the
PDK transmission can cycle through gears via the paddles on the
steering wheel. The gauges are arrayed in typical Porsche fashion,
with the tachometer front-and-center, and the rest spreading out in
a cool 3-D pattern around it. White gauge faces were optional and
given Porsche's penchant for tacking huge prices on minor upgrades,
they probably cost as much as an expensive weekend out on the town.
And yes, the 112,198 miles it shows is accurate, and although there
are minor signs of use commensurate with the mileage and age of
this Porsche, the overall condition is crisp and clean.
The "4S" upgrade was all about performance, punching the flat-six
out to 3.8 liters and 385 horsepower (up from 3.6 liters and 345
horsepower in the base model), along with upgrading the Cabriolet
to an all-wheel drive car. This one also features the Sport Chrono
package which provides a tweak in fuel delivery and shift points to
compensate for the added weight of a cabriolet. And speaking of
shifts, the dual-clutch PDK 7-speed automated manual transmission
changes gears faster than any human possibly could and allows for
as much control as the driver wants depending on what mode is
selected: paddle or traditional "Auto" selected by the floor
shifter. Properly serviced from new by the original owner, the
engine is broken in and still performing at optimal levels and
starts with a great cackling idle that raises to a tenor howl as
the engine heads for the 8000 RPM redline. The adaptive suspension
underneath is a thing of beauty, and despite all its technological
advances, this 911 still has a great "feel" on the road that seems
natural to the driver, anticipating corners and attacking varied
road conditions with full confidence. Giant 19-inch rubber probably
helps, wrapped around lovely Carrara White aluminum wheels that act
as frames for the massive cross-drilled brakes and bright red
calipers.
Complete with all its original manuals and extensive service
records, this well-optioned, 1-owner 911 Carrera 4S is offered at a
fraction of its original price. Nicely maintained and ready to be
enjoyed for years to come, clean 911s like this never last long.
