For the 1990-2002 year models, the R129 platform iteration of the
Mercedes-Benz SL was in full effect. With a few minor updates here
and there, the R129 SL was so popular that Mercedes was actually
able to keep it in production with minimal changes for 12 years
straight! That just goes to show how lovable and popular these
little cars were, even when new. Nowadays, these cars typically
find their way into the hands of enthusiasts, and that's mostly the
"regular" models. This 1997 SL320 is a special 40th Anniversary
Edition equipped with options specific to the Anniversary Edition.
These were only produced for the 1997 model year, and just 250 were
made.
This example is a low-mileage spent the majority of its life in
Florida. The exterior is finished in a brilliant purple/blue/silver
color called Quartz Blue Metallic. This was a special paint color
reserved for the 40th Anniversary SLs. For being a Florida vehicle,
the paint is in remarkable condition that suggests this vehicle was
garaged or at least covered. With just 44,864 miles on the odometer
it is no wonder that there are very few imperfections in the paint.
Additionally, this car is wearing the original wheels which are
styled in true Mercedes-Benz fashion, yet a nice break from the
older designs that had been implemented on their products for many
years. The exterior defects are minimal, and minus some typical
'90s Mercedes sideview mirror discoloration the outside of the car
hardly needs anything.
Step inside, and you'll be transported to a completely different
place. The interior is finished in a soothing gray material with
special 40th Anniversary Edition wood trim on the doors, steering
wheel, dash, and console. The interior of this car is strikingly
lighter and more calming than the interior of other contemporary
Mercedes-Benz products. The special Royal Maple wood trim is sure
to catch the eye of any discerning Mercedes enthusiast. The
interior is very nice, clean, and complete showing only some age
and wear on the steering wheel, seats, and on some buttons. This
car still has the correct 40th Anniversary blue-trimmed floormats
and they are in excellent condition.
Overall, this car is in about the condition you can expect for a
car with this low of mileage. The body has been well-preserved by
the Florida climate, but some interior wear can likely be
attributed to the Florida sun. The engine runs smoothly and
quietly; this is a clean example of German engineering inside and
out!
