Initially dubbed the Spectre, the Phantom III carried on the use of
spectral names for Rolls-Royces to come, including the Wraith and
Spirit. And once again, as a Rolls-Royce it was almost sinfully
well built. Little wonder these cars were called the 'Best in the
World'. The Phantom III was the first Rolls-Royce to be powered by
a V-12 engine - incredibly complex, yet silent, smooth and powerful
- and was Rolls-Royce's response to its American competitors during
the cylinder wars of the late 1920s.
It was also the first Rolls-Royce to feature independent front
suspension along with hydraulically adjustable shock absorbers and
an on-board jacking system. The Phantom III was a remarkable
automobile; all 6,200 lbs. of it! Despite the weight, it is
motivated by a 160 bhp 7.3-litre twelve-cylinder engine capable of
a 16-second 0-60 mph dash. This is one of 727 Phantom IIIs built by
Rolls-Royce between 1936 and 1939.
Rolls-Royce Foundation records indicate that chassis no. 3BT 161
was sold to J.S. Inskip, Inc. on 12 January 1937 to customer John
Paine of Troy, New York. The chassis arrived in the U.S. on the
S.S. Scythia on 24 May 1937. Fitted with five-passenger, enclosed
drive saloon Inskip coachwork, the RRF's Schoellkopf Cards provide
the provenance of the car, showing a series of U.S. owners in
Pennsylvania and Delaware as late as June 1976, at which time the
car was noted as being in very poor shape.
At some point the car was shipped to Australia, and there, the
current Sedanca de Ville coachwork in the style of Inskip was
fitted in 1992-1993. The consignor bought it from Tony Paalman in
the late 1990s and attesting to the quality of the work, it has
been shown at the Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza in 1997 and
Paleis het Loo in the Netherlands. A gorgeous example of one of
Rolls-Royce's most exceptional automobiles, it will surely attract
lots of attention wherever it goes.

Der intern �Spectre" (Gespenst) genannte Phantom III bildete den
Anfang einer Reihe geisterhafter Namen sp�terer Modelle wie Wraith
und Spirit. Und auch dieser Rolls-Royce war wieder einmal s�ndhaft
gut gebaut. So darf es nicht �berraschen, dass man damals diese
Fahrzeuge die �Besten der Welt" nannte. Der Phantom III war der
erste Rolls-Royce mit einem Zw�lfzylinder - unglaublich komplex,
aber leise, sanft und kraftvoll. Er war die Antwort des britischen
Unternehmens auf die amerikanischen Wettbewerber in den
Zylinderkriegen Ende der 1920er Jahre.
Der Phantom III war auch der erste Rolls-Royce mit vorderer
Einzelradaufh�ngung, hydraulischen Sto�d�mpfern und einem
eingebauten eigenen Wagenhebersystem. Ein bemerkenswertes
Automobil, alle drei Tonnen. Trotz des Gewichts gelingt es dem 160
PS starken 7,3 Liter Zw�lfzylinder, den Riesen in 16 Sekunden auf
100 km/h zu beschleunigen. Zwischen 1936 und 1939 wurden insgesamt
727 Phantom III gefertigt.
Unterlagen der Rolls-Royce Foundation belegen, dass 3BT 161 am 12.
Januar 1937 an J.S. Inskip, Inc., verkauft wurde. Das Chassis kam
an Bord der S.S. Scythia am am 24. Mai 1937 in den USA an, um dort
mit einer f�nfsitzigen geschlossenen Karosserie ausgestattet zu
werden. K�ufer war ein John Paine aus Troy im US-Bundesstaat New
York. Die Schoellkopf Karten der RRF belegen bis in den Juni 1976
eine Reihe von Besitzern in den USA, in Pennsylvania und Delaware.
Zu dem Zeitpunkt besagen die Unterlagen, dass der Wagen sich in
einem relativ schlechten Zustand befunden haben soll.
Anschlie�end ging der Wagen nach Australien, wo er zwischen 1992
und 1993 mit einer Sedanca de Ville Karosserie im Stil von Inskip
versehen wurde. Der einliefernde Besitzer erwarb diesen Phantom III
Ende der 1990er Jahre von Tony Paalman. Als Best�tigung der
Qualit�t der in Australien durchgef�hrten Arbeit wurde der Phantom
1997 zum Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza und sp�ter zum Concours
Paleis het Loo in den Niederlanden eingeladen. Dieses wundersch�ne
Exemplar ist eines der au�ergew�hnlichsten Rolls-Royce Automobile
und erregt Aufmerksamkeit, wo immer es auftaucht.To view this car
