While Chevrolet produced the beautiful "bubbletop" coupes for two
years, 1961 was the only year that Pontiac used this graceful
design. Hemmings Motor News (February, 2016) called this "one of
GM's most iconic body styles... It's those roof pillars. They're
conspicuously thin - like Don Draper's tie or the spaghetti straps
on one of Jayne Mansfield's gowns--and they're stretched to the
point of breaking, pulled tight over a fishbowl of safety glass."
There were only 13,297 Ventura "bubbletops" made, and this is an
excellent example. The body is arrow-straight and has a Richelieu
Blue paint job, with a white spear. The interior sports fresh
tri-tone upholstery and a re-covered dash pad. The Deluxe steering
wheel (blue & translucent plastic) has been beautifully restored (a
remolding process that costs over $1000). It appears that the drive
train is original, a 389 engine with added Tri-Power for a great
look and superb performance, backed by a 3-speed Hydra-matic
transmission. Wide whitewall radial tires are mounted on Pontiac
8-lug alloy hubs, with an 8-lug spare and correct hold-down plate.
The jack equipment appears to be original. Optional equipment
includes an original AM radio, clock, power brakes and steering,
and aftermarket front power windows. I had my mechanic go through
the car completely, including carburetors and brakes. It's a
delight to drive, and ready for cruising or show. Again, according
to Hemmings, "any bubbletop is considered a highly collectible car,
regardless of which GM division it hails from. The Ventura
bubbletop's one-year-only production has made them difficult to
