For Sale: 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL500 in Lavergne, Tennessee

Vehicle Description

The Mercedes Benz S-class cars are personal luxury cars, German style. Solid, sporty, luxurious, capable. New ones are the darlings of the rich and famous who have plenty of money and a desire to impress others with their latest new toy. Used ones are just as capable and just as much fun to drive as they were new, but thanks to the laws of depreciation, can be bought for extremely affordable prices. Check out this fine example of a German, V8, sports/luxury car.

SL stands for Sport Lightweight (or Sportlich-Leicht in German). The designation was actually suggested by an American who started importing them after WWII. This car is an example of the 4th generation design with clean, solid looks that anyone can tell are clearly German, even without seeing the iconic Star on the front or back of the car. The removable hardtop is so well fitted that it is easy to mistake for a coupe when installed. But remove it, and you can push a button to raise or lower the power roof to enjoy open air cruising. This car is presented in a rich shade of Gold and it does lead with that Mercedes Star on the grill which is flanked by headlights with their own windshield wipers. Body colored bumpers integrate well with the style lines of the car which carry down the side of the car from front to rear and the Mercedes alloy wheels look great.

Open the door and you will be welcomed into the lap of German luxury. The door panel has a band of rich burled wood running across the top along with controls for the power operated seat and a speaker for the high-end sound system. Those front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive works of ergonomic art dressed in leather and heated. A 4-spoke steering wheel is mounted on a tilt column and sits in front of a dash board with 160 mph speedometer. These cars are designed to run the Autobahns! There is a tachometer and a clock to the right and engine gauges to the left with other maintenance and level indicators along the bottom. The center console is trimmed in more of that burled wood and contains the ventilation controls as well as the stereo. Below those is the leather wrapped shifter for the automatic transmission as well as power window switches, the seat heater switches, and a nice storage console between the seats.

Under the hood you will find a 5.0-liter V8 motor tucked down in the engine bay. It has a dual snorkel cold air intake system (from the factory!) with Mercedes Benz lettered across it on both sides. So, with that and the engine dress up kit, it presents a neat and clean appearance. Under those covers there are a controller for the 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes with power booster along with a power steering pump and a serpentine belt driving all the accessories. Power flows back through a 4-speed automatic transmission to the rear end which has a cooler built into the rear cover and then to the wheels through a 4-link independent suspension with coil springs. Up front has coil springs and control arms providing great handling and big discs providing plenty of stopping power. The rubber meets the road through 225/55R16 tires all around mounted on those sharp looking Mercedes alloys.

Solid, sporty, luxurious and capable. Also well maintained with records to show that. Come on down and check out what a German personal luxury car is like. We think you will be impressed.
