Estimate:

  • Accompanied by the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity (COA)

The American fascination with Porsche took off when importer Max Hoffman brought 15 special roadsters to the U.S. in 1954. In 1959, the Reutter-bodied Roadster was replaced by the sophisticated Convertible D, which boasted a taller windshield, windup windows, and a top that fit better. The accompanying Cabriolet offered even more creature comforts. The 356B arrived in 1960, with 15-in. wheels, heavier and taller bumpers, and a revised slope to the hood. Headlights were moved to the top of the fenders, with amber parking lights below them, and brake vents below the bumper.

The car offered here is a 1963 1600S Cabriolet. It is a highly attractive restoration of a very solid matching-numbers car and is offered with a Porsche COA. The paintwork, done in the original shade of Heron Grey, and bodywork are exceptional; the fit is outstanding, and the panels are straight. The chrome is excellent, and the lights and all badges are immaculate. The interior presents beautifully in blue leather, correct per the Certificate of Authenticity. The Certificate also shows that the car was originally equipped with a Blaupunkt radio with dual speakers, rearview mirror, antenna, two suitcases, and fire extinguisher, making this a nicely optioned and important example. Included with the sale is a rare factory hardtop. All in all, it presents essentially as it did when it left the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen on 1 July 1963.

The accompanying Porsche COA confirms that the car retains its original matching-numbers 1600 Super engine and four-speed transmission. The car is said to be a reliable and enjoyable driver, having been in the collection of the consignor for the last eight years. It is believed that the car spent most of its life in Virginia and is consequently in excellent structural condition. Always popular for touring or showing, the 1600 Super Cabriolet will make a fine partner at any automotive event, especially with its unusual color combination. Much like it did some 50 years ago, it remains a stellar performer which will carve corners with ease, all while offering the top-down motoring pleasure that only a drop-top Porsche can offer.
