Extremely rare, 1 of only 61 red Shelby Hertz cars ever built. Even more rare is that this Shelby has its original block with the VIN number stamped. The Ford VIN number on the car as well as on the block match and have been verified with the SAAC as correct for Shelby VIN number 6S977. The car has spent almost its life in California and Texas and retains its original rust-free sheet metal. The fenders appear to be original as well because their date codes are consistent with the rest of the car. The car also has its original Hertz magnum wheels, Cobra tachometer, competition sear belts and more. Power steering and brakes.

On December 21, 1965, the Hertz Car Rental Company ordered 1,000 Shelby GT350's from Shelby America that would be used as a promotion for the Hertz Car Rental Company. An H was added to the GT350 to designate these as "Hertz" cars. All 1,000 cars were supposed to be black with gold stripes but 61 red cars, 50 blue cars, 50 green cars and 50 white cars were delivered to the Hertz company. These cars became known as "Rent-A-Racers" and would be seen at local racetracks. It has also been said that enthusiasts would rent the cars long enough to swap out the desirable Shelby engine and replace it with their Mustang engine then return the rental car to Hertz. Whether the car lost their original engines while owned by Hertz or during the following 40+ years after, it is a fact that many of these cars no longer have their original blocks.
