Vehicle Description
Looking for a classic pickup that'll stand out in the crowd? Pull
up almost anywhere behind the wheel of this 1951 Ford F-1 and it's
a pretty sure thing no one will be mistaking it for anyone else's
ride. This distinctive pickup features an array of inspired custom
touches over its vintage foundation. Add to that its freshened
drivetrain and a number of upgrades under its hood and you have a
truck that's every bit as fun to drive as it is to gawk at.
Ford created the F-1 when, in the aftermath of WWII, the
manufacturer set about creating a line of pickups that no longer
shared an underpinning with any of its passenger cars. The F-1's
rugged form lends itself well to the customization that's been
added to the mix - the amplified front and rear fenders on this
pickup would catch anyone's attention right off the bat. Those
enhancements sit right next to a cab that's been left in largely
stock configuration, down to the sizable visor looming over the
front windshield, and features a front grille and headlights that,
like the majority of the other trim on board, has been blacked out
for dramatic effect. The blending of original and customized
elements creates a very effective overall look. Riding low to the
ground and clad in matte black, this truck will no doubt pull focus
wherever it roams.
The interior is very nicely finished, with a pair of brand new
black TMI bucket seats sitting astride a contrasting red center
console that show very little wear on their detailed vinyl
surfaces. A snug-fitting, new headliner has been installed, along
with new trim panels and fresh gray carpeting that lines the floor.
A lot of careful planning went into this driving environment - the
pieces really fit together well, both spatially and aesthetically.
Farther forward, the dash area also features a great blend of new
and old - it's still mostly in the same overall configuration it
left the assembly line with so many years ago, but it now sports
Dakota Digital gauges in the instrument cluster and a retro-look
aftermarket stereo at its center. An updated steering wheel sits on
the tilt column just in front. The bed floor is lined with diamond
plate and you'll find a modern 20 gallon fuel cell in place just
behind the cab.
You might be inclined to think that streetability would be a
secondary concern in a modded pickup like this, but this '51
actually runs and drives impressively well - you don't often come
across this kind of ride quality on a lowered truck. It sits on a
much more modern S10 frame, which definitely accounts for some of
its smoothness. Power comes via a freshened drivetrain - the 350
cubic inch V8 sitting in the engine compartment is armed with an
Edelbrock intake and carb and recently had its main seal replaced
and the automatic transmission was serviced and resealed not long
ago as well. There are a number of other outstanding upgrades on
display here as well - HEI ignition teams with MSD plug wires to
provide maximum spark, and a sizable radiator sits up front with an
electric fan to keep operating temperatures under control. Power
steering makes for easy navigation, while power brakes that feature
front discs with slotted and drilled rotors provide dependable,
fade resistant stops. This head turner rides on a set of jet black
17" American Racing Torque Thrust wheels wrapped with Nitto
tires.
