Sometimes an item is so good that its trademarked name becomes a generic term for an entire category of products. Many of us say Kleenex instead of tissue, Xerox instead of copy, or Band-Aid instead of bandage, despite knowing the proper term. The off-roading world finds one more example in the storied Jeep. To many, the word Jeep defines an array of capable, feel-good fun machines that can be found in all the places we'd rather be, from the mountains and the woods to the beaches and the dunes. And classics like this killer CJ-5 are an excellent reminder why!

BODY

Nearly every iconic Jeep has a following, but the legendary CJ is arguably the most sought after 4x4 of all time. Introduced in 1954 as a more civilian-friendly unit, the CJ-5 was billed as "the universal Jeep" that could serve as "the world's most useful vehicle". This '78 model wraps all that worldly swagger in an eye-popping coat of House Of Kolor Tangerine Pearl 2-stage that was sprayed during a 2001 restoration. At the front of that pigment, a polished bumper centers a polished push bar and color-keyed KC driving lights in front of a polished grille, clear parking lamps and a Delta H4 headlights. Behind those torches, a chrome-trimmed hood leads the eye to a folding windshield that's propped between polished wipers, a frenched antenna and polished mirrors. Those mirrors reflect CARR steps, monochromatic flares, removable doors and tight Bestop Supertop canvas that frames a body-matched roll cage. And behind that cage, blue dot taillights illuminate a polished fuel filler, a second polished bumper and a polished Mickey Thompson wheel that's fitted with a 33x12.50R15 BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain spare.

ENGINE

Hoist this Jeep's hood and you'll find upgraded power courtesy of a a well-dressed 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8. At the top of that mill, a big K&N air filter funnels oxygen through a coated Edelbrock carburetor to a lightweight Weiand intake. That intake feeds a black block, which spins a Comp hydraulic flat-tappet cam beneath cast iron heads, polished Edelbrock valve covers and polished breathers. Beneath those breathers, loomed Moroso Ultra 40 Race Wires, snapped to a quality HEI distributor, trace short Hedman Hedders. At the front of those tubes, billet pulleys spin an aluminum water pump between a polished alternator, modern power steering and a coated fuel pump. And in front of those ancillaries, a big Be Cool radiator keeps an eye on temps.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Crawling under this rig reveals a sturdy chassis that, given the age of this CJ's restoration, appears surprisingly weather-free. Power meets the pavement through a reliable 4-speed transmission, which rides between a correct transfer case and chrome-capped axles - the biggest of which is a correct AMC Model 20. That drivetrain rolls on a factory frame that's stretched over factory springs and heavy-duty shocks. That frame is guided by power-assisted steering, and stopped by power-assisted disc and drum brakes. Exhaust flows from aluminized pipes to throaty turbo mufflers. And at the corners of the floor, polished Mickey Thompson wheels twist a quartet of 35x12.50R15 BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/As around quality Warn hubs.

INTERIOR

Inside this classic you'll find an airy cockpit that has enough room to be your vehicle of choice for any weekend adventure. Front and center, vinyl bench and bucket seats provide enough comfort for four adults. Beneath those seats, clean carpet floats Jeep-themed mats under metal foot pedals, polished Hurst shifters and big Bostwick speakers. Those speakers thump thanks to an MP3-compatible Kenwood CD player that, along with the ute's ignition switch, lives in a lockable metal console. And in front of the driver, a polished steering wheel laps a polished, tilting column, which reflects a padded dash that's finished with crisp digital telemetry.
