Vehicle Description
The 1968 AMC AMX is a very unique vehicle for many reasons. It
stood out in a crowded Muscle Car era for a variety of reasons. But
interestingly, it was the only two-seater, steel-bodied American
car since the first-generation Thunderbird and a short wheelbase of
97 inches. This was meant to be AMC's performance car, and with a
variety of powerful AMC V8s available the AMX certainly fit the
bill.
This 1968 AMX is part of the first year of AMX production. This
now-iconic American Motors product was only produced from
1968-1970, and owning one in this condition is like being the
caretaker for a some of those bygone days in American history. To
an extent, this car was a competitor for the Corvette (and for a
lot less money!). This particular example is in excellent overall
condition, with no issues to speak of and is a turn-key car ready
to be added to your collection. It has been repainted and it shows
well. The paint is in great condition with no major blemishes or
damage. The body is clean and straight and even the underside is in
excellent condition! The floor pans are in great shape and there's
no doubt someone put the time in to keep this AMX in great shape.
Worried about lack of space? It even has a luggage rack for all
those cross-country tours you want to do!
The interior remains mostly if not completely original. It has not
been redone, and had very few (if any) major components replaced.
One fun thing about the design of the AMX interior is that most
things (HVAC controls, ash tray, shifter) are not labelled in a
traditional fashion; they all play into the spaceship feel of the
car. For example, the controls for the heater and A/C are labelled
"Weather Eye," while the shifter is labelled "Shift Command." The
ash tray? This piece is labelled "Ash Receiver" for maximum
spaceship-ness. When sitting in this car, it is very easy to see
how someone could have felt like they were in a space ship! As a
whole, the interior is in excellent condition and needs nothing to
be enjoyed as it is.
This mini-rocket is powered by a 343 cubic inch AMC V8. It puts out
280 horsepower and will move this little car with ease. It runs and
drives just the way it should. Both the engine and the 3-speed
"Shift-Command" automatic transmission have been rebuilt, and
function as they ought to. The engine bay is organized, clean, and
genuinely pleasing to look at. Everything is how it is supposed to
be, and the level of cleanliness is amazing.
If you're looking for a unique piece of American history, or if
you're looking for a nice quality AMC product, you'll certainly
want to consider this AMX. This car is well-appointed, well-sorted,
and is sure to turn some heads at any venue.
