Vehicle Description
1974 Mercedes Benz 450SL
Back in this early '70's era Mercedes-Benz was known for over
engineering their cars and constructing them like Panzer tanks.
Utilizing the best technology of the time, and being innovative in
their designs, these cars are now on the verge of being
collectibles. They certainly are classics, and obviously do not
have the glitz and glamour of today's Mercedes-Benz models, but no
matter what, they retain the quintessential Mercedes-Benz "THUD"
when you close the door, regardless of age.
At all but 147,000 miles this car is in need of some TLC.
Exterior
Originally blue on blue now white on blue, a several year ago
respray shows signs of patina, and some dents and markings. Badging
is all there, and bumpers and britework are in good condition. It
is unknown what condition the convertible top is in due to an
inability to remove the hard top. This car does have heat
insulating glass and a rear window defogger for the hardtop.
Interior
Blue MB Tex seats in fair condition flank a center console with
some wood accent around the gear shift lever. As it ascends to the
dash, various controls and trim present in well used condition.
Some trim has been pulled off its mounting to insert what appears
to be a hands-free microphone for a cell phone. Carpeting is all
there and shows wear but is clean. A white headliner is covering
the underside of the hardtop and shows in good condition. Power
windows, air conditioning, an automatic antenna and a central power
locking system are installed options on this car.
Drivetrain
A 275.8ci V8 and an automatic transmission are installed, however
at the time of photographing and inspecting we could not get this
car to run.
Undercarriage
Some major repairs have been done to the underbody to remediate
rust. The remediation method was not the neatest of jobs. Some
corrosive rust does still exist.
Technically a project car, with some of the problems that exist.
Attention will have to be paid to many details, however the car
definitely could be brought back to life. Many unknowns are within
the history of this car, so it may be wise to have a knowledgeable
person tag along for a close look.
