Vehicle Description
1954 Ford Crestline Sunliner Convertible
The Ford Crestline model had several versions of the car depending
on what your preferences were. The Sunliner was a convertible, the
Fodor was a 4-door sedan with extra chrome trim, The Skyliner which
had an open rooftop which was retractable and was referred to as a
basket handle design. Our example here is the Sunliner. A 2-door
coupe with a convertible top and modernized through restoration
styling.
Here at Classic Auto Mall for consignment is a pre-fin, pre-jet
age, post excessive chrome era automobile. Simplistic design almost
seems boring from what is to come, but it was very effective.
Suburbia was expanding at leaps and bounds, and this coupe was the
perfect grocery getter or night out for the folks kinda car for the
everyday man and his wife. Affordable enough to have more than 1
car the 2-car family was born in this era, mainly due to cost.
Exterior
A stunning Torch Red respray covers all the straight and true steel
panels. As noted, minimal brite work, and chrome is present, but
just enough to add contrast to the red. It appears a different
grille was put in that being a somewhat heavier one than original.
A stainless belt line molding runs from bow to stern, is in good
condition, and has a very slight wrap around fronting the minimal
rear fender which protrudes just slightly. Lake pipes are noted on
the rockers, and like new hubcaps are attached to wide white
sidewall tires. Topping all this off in style is a near perfect
white canvas convertible top, which has recently had new pumps put
on to raise and lower it.
Interior
A simple stitched in white, red vertical tufted vinyl seating
arrangement of a split 50/50 bench up front, and a rear bench in
back fills the interior. Very clean door panels in total red, greet
you when you swing open the doors. Here you can gaze your eyes on
the power window toggles in chrome. The metal dash has been
simplified to include the original half circle speedo, as well as
an aluminum strip running directly under the speedo from the
driver's door panel to glovebox. This aluminum strip contains
various gauges and toggles to aid you in keeping track of the cars
vitals, moving the top up and down, and playing the awesome
aftermarket stereo which is hidden in the glovebox. A new model
Ford padded steering wheel is seen fronting the dash, and controls
non power steering, so grab on tightly! Red carpet floods the floor
and is nice condition.
Drivetrain
A newer era (possibly '80's?) 302ci V8 motor is topped by a Holly
Carb setup, Mallory ignition coil and distributor, and powered by a
12-volt conversion. A Weiand aluminum intake manifold helps the
carb inhale easier. All this operation is bolted to a 3-speed C-4
automatic transmission.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust and corrosion is seen on various undercarriage
parts, which would be typical for a car of this era that was well
taken care of. Some floorpan areas, as well as inside rear fenders
at one time had corrosive rust through but is seems in all areas
this has been remediated. Air shocks and 4-wheel drum brakes are
noted underneath too.
A Florida car means surface rust, but no salt damage, so any
repairs were definitely due to moisture have since long been
repaired. A good driver which it was used by the consigner, who
states he drove it all over the place to shows, cruises and any
other reason he could think of to drive it. Now getting older, as
we all tend to do, he needs to part with this completed car, so he
can finish his other cars, and enjoy them as well, hence the reason
for the very fair price sale.
