In 2006, Ford released the Shelby Mustang GT-H, a modern-day interpretation of the 1966 Shelby Mustang G.T.350H Rent-A-Racer. Like its predecessor, the GT-H was available exclusively as a rental car at select Hertz rental agencies as part of their “Fun Collection.”
For 2007, the Shelby GT-H returned, but this time around it came to your local Hertz rental center as a convertible! Another run of 500 Shelby GT-Hs was produced for 2007, and every one was a soft-top. Black paint with gold stripes was again the exterior color scheme of choice and the car came with a variety of performance and styling upgrades. The biggest change between the ’06 coupe and ’07 convertible was the power-operated soft-top and integrated light-bar which brought back memories of convertible Shelby Mustangs of yesteryear. The new GT-H convertible also received larger 18" wheels and performance tires.
Being offered for sale is an original 2007 Shelby Mustang GT-H Convertible, with just 21,466 miles on the odometer Shelby and Hertz documented. A true high performance collector car, the example being offered is number 007 from a limited edition of 500 built cars. The debut of the 2007 Shelby Mustang GT-H Convertible in March 2007 at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction was an exciting moment in American automotive history as it marked the unveiling of the first convertible in the history of the legendary Shelby/Hertz "Rent-A-Racer" program. Car # 1 sold for $250,000, with the proceeds going to the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.
Instantly recognizable in black exterior paint set off with gold "Le Mans" dual racing stripes and "Shelby GT-H" rocker stripes, the 2007 Shelby Mustang GT-H Convertible is clearly a modern American Muscle car, offering the thrill of high performance driving, with the safety and comfort of contemporary automobile technology. Ford Racing Performance Group provided Shelby its FR1 Power Pack to add 25 horsepower and an additional 10ft/lbs of torque to the existing Mustang GT4.6 Liter V8 power train. The package included a 90mm Cold Air kit, Muffler Kit, a new X-pipe, Ford Racing "GTA" axle-back mufflers, and the Ford Racing Handling Pack (FR3), which includes specially tuned dampers, lowering springs, sway bars, strut tower brace and a Ford Racing 3.55:1 ratio rear axle assembly. With 325hp and 330lb/ft of torque, press the pedal and hear the performance muffler and X-pipe vibrate as the car surges from 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds and completes the ¼ mile in 13.9 seconds at 101.1mph.
Interesting history on car # 007 is that during its in-service with Hertz it was reported stolen! However, it was quickly recovered and no damage was done to the car. Imagine being the thief (hopefully sitting in jail) and having bragging rights that you stole a Shelby Hertz rent a car!!!
