Vehicle Description
1964 Cadillac DeVille Convertible
With all the talk about Hot Rods, Horsepower, Handling, and Speed,
there is almost no room left for just plain old cruising. There is
something to be said about hopping in a huge automobile, dropping
the top, and going for a drive. Remember the Sunday drive? Whatever
happened to that tradition? When gas was cheap, and big metal was
plentiful, what better way to spend an afternoon?
Speaking of cruising here's a very appropriate quote from the
consigner of this long gold rad Cad: "bought this beauty from
Brownsville, Texas about 9 years ago and it's been an amazing ride.
My first car memories were in a similar Caddie sitting on my
grandfather's lap. This one has been on many a cruise with my own
two boys...with seatbelts of course! Smooth ride, top down, great
tunes and down the road we'd go! It's been in more than a few
homecoming parades and has always been a head-turner. Power
steering, power brakes, new radiator, retro-look yet modern
stereo...as my boys have grown, we simply need the garage bay, so
gotta part ways with my golden girl."
Exterior
A total respray in gallons of gold covers the massive steel panels
of this car. Chrome and brite work seem clear and fairly shiny,
with a few marks here and there. A virtually new white canvas top
is seen and is so new it will need to be stretched a bit for it to
totally close. A gold flying goddess hood ornament replaces the
original.
Interior
According to the build plate, was originally done in red, so we can
safely assume a newer interior was installed with the respray and
changed to gold. A front and rear bench, gold carpet in fair
condition, make up the passenger area. Matching door panels with
power window toggles are noted. A very nice dash, matching an
original configuration can be seen, which includes an AM/FM
Cassette radio. This is fronted by a very nice steering wheel which
is also original looking.
Drivetrain
Cadillac didn't skimp on horsepower in the 1960s, either. The 429ci
V8 with a Carter 4-barrel carburetor produces 340hp. While there
were engines in the stable that may have generated more power, this
one was designed to idle almost silently and to pull the heavy car
along with the thrust of an electric motor and just a whisper from
the tailpipe. Couple this with a smooth 3-speed automatic and you
are in the cruising business.
Undercarriage
Seen underneath are various areas of concern as to rust through.
Including but not limited to bottom of inside front fenders as they
join the rocker panel, areas in the floorpans that appear to
possibly have been re-lined above, however original exposed area is
visible. Surface rust on the frame, and a major area in the rear of
the car where it is possible the new gas tank is literally holding
up the trunk interior. It is advised that you do a careful
inspection to see for yourself what you are up against.
A cruiser, convertible that is nice up top but may have some
underlying issues that should be addressed. What better way to go
down the blue highway on a sunny day, and have the wind whipping at
your hair, and a cool breeze on your face.
