1965 Oldsmobile 442 Coupe
The "4-4-2" name (pronounced "Four-four-two") derives from the
original car's four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual
transmission, and dual exhausts (Some maintain that the '2'
indicated positive traction rear differential). It was originally
written "4-4-2" (with badging showing hyphens between the numerals)
and remained hyphenated throughout Oldsmobile's use of the
designation. Beginning in 1965, the 4-4-2s standard transmission
was a 3-speed manual along with optional 2-speed automatic and
4-speed manual, but were still badged as "4-4-2"s. By 1968 badging
was shortened to simply "442", but Oldsmobile brochures and
internal documents continued to use the "4-4-2" model
designation.
This consignment born on the second week of December 1965 in
Fremont California, 4-4-2 Sports Coupe has undergone major
restoration with some nifty upgrades. Now in pristine condition,
and not an original car, parts are still in consigner's possession
to make it a numbers matching car if you want to. It's nice to have
options!
Exterior
Saffron Yellow respray extremely well done showing very little
faults, covers the exterior of the straight steel panels. The side
scoops were restored, and new bumpers were put on. 15" Stage 1
wheels were put on, and redline tires wrapped around them. A black
painted contrasting top balances out the Saffron, as does the
chrome and black, below the belt molding, that stretches the length
of the car. Chrome door and window sill moldings from the factory
appear in very nice condition. Chrome roof drip moldings have been
optioned in as well.
Interior
Showroom condition black split back vinyl bench seating in front,
and a bench in back fill in the passenger compartment. Nice black
carpet with rubber protective heavy-duty individual mats, a Hurst
shifter, original restored beautiful 2 tone steering wheel, and
near factory dash, show off themselves to the seats, and the
passengers who sit in them. A perfect tight black vinyl headliner
hangs overhead, and interior lighting works like a charm. A triple
aftermarket gauge cluster hangs below the dash, as well as a
steering column mounted tachometer, just to keep track of the real
essentials under the hood.
Drivetrain
A 400ci V8 with a 4-Speed manual transmission which were both
rebuilt, and repainted, can be seen with the pop of the hood. The
mill sports Mondello ported Edelbrock aluminum heads, an MSD
ignition, an Edelbrock intake, Quick Fuel carburetor, and Hooker
Headers.
Undercarriage
Very clean frame and floorpans, with upgrades such as front end
steering and A frames replaced, all brakes and wheel cylinders
replaced, as well as adding dual master cylinder power to the
brakes. New U joints and driveshaft were put in, and a 2-1/2"
Flowmaster performance exhaust snakes its way from front to back on
the underside.
A beautiful execution for a full restoration, comes with original
California Black plates, original top end of motor, steel wheels
from the factory with dog dish caps, and he will throw in the close
ratio 4-speed that was taken out. Add to this a dyno sheet,
laminated sticker, and plenty of awards, and you'll be in early 442
heaven. And if you still have some apprehensions, come in and press
the pedal to the floor and remove all doubt. Hello 1965!
